Title: Power sector reform will increase access to electricity says Labour Minister

The efforts of the Federal Government at ensuring stable power supply in Nigeria, through the Power Sector Reform has received yet another boost following the handing over of the Ugheli Power Plc. to its successor Company Transcorp Ugheli Power Plc.

While performing the handing over ceremony on behalf of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Arch. Namadi Sambo, the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu tasked the successor company, Transcorp Ugheli Plc. on effective service delivery.

According to him, "The challenges is now for you to ensure that the successor Company that is being handed over to you today is transformed into world class company of reference in terms of the quality of service delivery, social corporate responsibility, customer satisfaction and profitability".

The Minister added that, Power Sector Reform will no doubt lead to increased access to electricity, engender private sector investment as well as improve infrastructure development and create massive employment opportunities for the citizenry.

When speaking further, Wogu re-affirmed the commitment of the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan to tackling the challenges of perennial darkness in Nigeria, in his words.   "This administration is indeed committed and is determined to keep its promise of taking Nigeria out of its perennial darkness within the shortest possible period".

In his remarks, the Chairman of Transnational Corporation (TRANSCORP), Mr. Tony Elumelu stated that Transcorp Ugheli Power Plant will play a significant role in improving electricity generation in Nigeria, saying that "We promise to increase the generating capacity of the power plant from its present state of 330 mega watts to 1,500 mega watts within the next three to five years".

The Executive Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan who was represented at the occasion by the Delta State Commissioner for Energy, Charles Chukwuemeka, expressed delight at the handing over of the power generating plant to Transcorp.    He commended President Goodluck Jonathan for his commitment to improving power generation in Nigeria.

"For the first time in this ountry, we see a Federal Government that says what they want to do and is actually doing it; the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan deserves optimum support and corporation from every Nigerians; for me the sign I see gladdens my heart",  he concluded.
