Title: Fashola donates 18 buses to prisons service, others
Post by: Mirror on Nov 12, 2013, 11:31 PM
Lagos State Comptroller of Prisons, Mrs. Catherine Ononye, yesterday decried the increasing number of prison inmates in the state. She said the prison authority is facing serious challenges transporting about 4, 900 inmates to various courts where they are standing trials.

This was even as the state governor, Babatunde Fashola, donated four buses to the prison authority in the state to ease the movement of the inmates. The governor also donated 14 buses to other institutions and bodies in the state. Speaking when she led other officials of the prisons on a courtesy visit, the Comptroller thanked the state government for the donation, saying it would facilitate the operations of the service.

She said: "We have about 4, 900 inmates in the various courts in the state and transporting some of them to the courts has been a problem. We are happy with these buses as it will add to our fleet to facilitate the movement of inmates from one place to another."

Ononye said the state command was still faced with many problems, such as poor prison infrastructure and called on the state government for assistance, saying the service would continue to partner the state government to ensure effective criminal justice system in the state.
