Workers of the defunct Nigeria Airways yesterday appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to approve their outstanding N70 billion benefits. The amount was part of the 20 years benefits to the former workers of the defunct airline as agreed between them and the Federal Government about nine years ago.
The formers workers decried that their colleagues in other countries had received their benefits.
One of the union leaders at the Murtala Mohammed Airport (MMA) in Lagos where the former workers protested, Mr. Ibrahim Husseini, said the government would require about N70 billion to offset the outstanding benefits. Husseini described the alleged government's reluctance to pay the former workers as gross insensitivity.
He many of the former workers had died died due to lack of funds for medical care. Husseini insisted that their colleagues in United States, United Kingdom, Italy and Cote d'Ivoire, had collected their full terminal benefits.
Also yesterday, the Trade Union Congress (TUC), National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), Air Transport Senior Staff Services of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) and National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) petitioned Jonathan over the plight of the defunct Nigeria Airways workers.
The unions wanted the Federal Government to look into the plights of the former workers in the interest of peace in the aviation sector.
The petition signed by Secretary General of NAAPE, Mr Aba Ocheme, urged Jonathan to intervene in the matter.
I just believe something has to be done about it on times so the case can be finally sealed off!
