Arising from his monthly meetings with contractors handling major evacuation of drains, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Sandy Onor has called contractors handling major drains to return to site while also urging Cross Riverians to adopt a hygienic and sanitary approach towards sustaining the environment.
Dr Onoh stated these while addressing contractors handling major drains within the Calabar metropolis.
According to him, the evacuation exercise would go a long way in enhancing free flow of sewage for run-off water as well as preventing flooding, adding that, the exercise was a step towards ensuring that, the State is environmentally conscious.
He therefore maintained that, the distilling process would facilitate the clean and green nature of the State, thus he called on Cross Riverians to desist from dumping refuse ndiscriminately, pointing out that, the State Government was putting in place adequate measures to sensitize the public on the importance of keeping the environment clean and healthy.
He appealed to contractors handling the major drains to return to site despite Government lean resources and would ensure the payment of their monies. He however, enjoined them to look beyond money noting that the safety of residents should rather be paramount to them and promised that Government would clear the outstanding debts owed them.
On his part, the contractor handling Federal Housing Channel/ Beebobsco Junction GULLY, Mr. Victor Idem (Felodem Nig Ltd) explained that, as much as they would want to return to site following the appeal of the Commissioner, they were financially; handicapped, adding that, their staff was owed salaries running into months and that, the equipment were most times hired.
He promised with his colleagues to return to site, if some money could be advanced to them.
Also speaking, the Project Manager of Channel 1 Crutech, Mr. Omini Dodeye said, that, the machine used for excavating "Swam buggy" has commenced work at the Channel 1 Crutech site.
He explained that, residents should desist from dumping waste in the drains and said that it could cause flooding and promised to complete the evacuation process soon.
