Rescue teams using search dogs are combing the rubble seeking survivors who may be trapped.
The mall — in Tongaat, north of the coastal city of Durban — was under construction, ambulance company Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha told the South African Press Agency (http://www.thepost.co.za/50-fear-trapped-in-mall-roof-collapse-1.1609415#.UouV9sSzKuI).
Botha told Reuters that at least 26 people had been taken to hospital with “massive traumatic injuries.”
Kwazulu-Natal Police spokesman Thulani Zwane told news site eNCA.com that a woman who was a construction worker at the site had died.
None of the reports could be independently confirmed by NBC News.
