Former Super Eagles star, Monday Odiaka, has backed John Obi Mikel to win the 2013 edition of the BBC African Footballer of the year award.

The Former U-23 star and Chelsea of England midfielder is among the five men shortlisted for the award alongside four others.

Odiaka opined that Mikel`s performance during the Super Eagles triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations outing in South Africa and winning the Europa League with Chelsea put him in the fore front of being crowned the best footballer in the continent.

He is however adamant that Mikel has the edge over other contenders looking at his exploits for both club and country respectively to lift the BBC award.

''He played a pivotal role in the Super Eagles AFCON success in South Africa and was also one of the top performers at the Confederations Cup in Brazil.

"If you also consider his performance in the qualifiers so far, you have to consider him good enough for the award."

The last Nigerian to win the award was Austine Jay Jay Okocha in 2004.The winner will be announced on December 2.
