Title: The Task Before The Next Minister For Environment
Post by: SR on Jun 24, 2011, 03:02 AM
By Churchill Okonkwo           As the nation awaits the screening, confirmation and assigning of portfolios to next ministers, I’m particularly worried with the purported re-nomination of John Ogar Odey – former minister for environment. I’m worried because his performance in that position was so pathetic that we witnessed retrogression from desertification in the north to soil erosion in the south, from oil spillage in Niger Delta to solid waste disaster in cities like Lagos, Ibadan, Kano, Kaduna, Onitsha, Aba. Mr. John Odey failed woefully to encourage and inspire chieftains in industry and others to join in pioneering the processes of clean sustainable environment and development in Nigeria. In fact, he appeared incapable of clearly understanding the significance and level of environmental treats and challenges facing Nigeria.
