The Turku Court of Appeals has sentenced the former ski jumping world champion, Matti Nykänen to 16 months of imprisonment for aggravated assault.
The court found that Nykänen, 47, assaulted his wife at the time, Mervi Tapola, on Christmas Day 2009.
Nykänen faces more than 7,700 euros in legal fees and was also ordered to pay Tapola a total of 5,000 euros for distress and suffering, and her medical expenses which amount to 800 euros.
The ruling in Turku confirmed his original sentence, on appeal, from Pirkanmaa District Court.
Nykänen has been imprisoned for a similar crime in the past. He has had many run-ins with the law since the 1980s, when he won four Olympic gold medals and five World Championship gold medals.
