The President of the University of Ilorin Student Union, Lawal Ahmed Abiodun, has re-affirmed the commitment of the union to the welfare of the entire student populace.

Lawal, who made this statement during an interactive meeting with students at the Student Union Building, urged the students to always safe-guard the union's objectives, which he said is to protect, defend, and to uphold the interest and the welfare of students.

"Since our inauguration last June, I made it known to the entire members of the University community that the Union shall take as priority, the interest of the students. Our union is a union of the students, by the students and for the students", he said.

The Student Union President lamented the transportation challenges facing students on campus as a result of the inadequacy of tricycles known as "Keke NAPEP", adding that the recent increment of transport fare from N10 to N20 was as a result of high maintenance cost.

Lawal, however, disclosed that the Union had entered negotiations with tricycle dealers to procure more tricycles in a bid to ease the problem of long queues at the car park.

He said that in furtherance of its objectives, the Union advocated for a lecture - free week for students to revise before the commencement of examination, provision of seats to all faculties' surroundings and the expansion and renovation of the car park, which he said has been approved by the Vice. Chancellor.

Lawal said that the Union intends to have a Foundation account to cater for students who might need assistance in term of health issue.

According to him, the Foundation shall have its revenue generated from all students of the University. "Every student will pay a paltry sum of N100 in to the account. This is to inculcate the spirit of life saving in us", he said.
