Post by: femifemzy3 on Jan 30, 2014, 11:52 PM
Some university lecturers on Wednesday called for the re- introduction of indigenous languages for teaching primary and secondary schools students and even undergraduates in Nigeria.
.
They said in separate interviews that education would be complete and developed if indigenous languages were used in classes.
.
Prof. Dayo Duyile, a Senior Lecturer in the Mass Communication Department, Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji-Arakeji, Osun, said the use of indigenous languages would help to develop the students.
.
"Education is not complete without indigenous languages because this is the easiest way of communication.
.
"When we learn in our own mother's tongue, it makes things easy for both the lecturers and the students.
.
"There are things you want to explain to the students that cannot be well expressed except you explain it in a language that will be clearer to them,'' Duyile said.
.
Prof. Ayo Fadahunsi, Dean, Faculty of Arts, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun, said indigenous languages should be adopted to make teaching and learning easier at the tertiary level.
.
"Indigenous languages should also be used in teaching our undergraduates to make their learning.
.
"It is good we adopt indigenous languages in our classrooms. When you do something in your language, it is very good,'' he said.
.
Fadahunsi urged the Federal Government to adopt and implement the policy, saying that the country had enough resources to adopt it.
.
Dr Sule Sheidu of the Department of Education Administration, University of Lagos, said indigenous languages should be used from the primary to the tertiary levels.
.
"If the country can put this development into consideration, I think it will help our students.
.
"The use of indigenous languages would be a very good development. It is used in countries like South Africa and others,'' Sheidu said.
