Heavy rainfall that lasted for seven hours on Sunday afternoon in Old Ife Road area of Ibadan, resulted to heavy flooding. Three people died as a result of the heavy flood.
The victims were female. Two of the victims were children under the age of 15, while the third victim was a woman.
Their corpses floated on Monday morning on a stream near the Lagos-Ibadan expressway at Old Ife road.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that the corpses had been taken to an unidentified morgue in the state capital.
One of the eyewitness pleaded with the state government to find a lasting solution to flooding in the area.
"I want to appeal to the state government to do something about the newly built filling station that is hindering the easy passage of water. The government should also expand the river and stop people from throwing refuse inside the river," the eyewitness said.
May the soul of the deceased rest in peace. As we can read from this report, both government and residents are to be blamed for the mishap. Irresponsible government combined with ungovernable residents. When people in government has given more priority to embezzlement than establishing infrastructural amenities, that was the aftermath results.
Ignorance, negligence, or wickedness are the orders of the day, citizens also contribute to the woes. Instead of self-discipline in the heart of the citizens, indiscipline has been the first word in their dictionaries. If not, how can we see any act that can endanger our lives and still stimulate the situation?
In my opinion, l don't think the residents of Old lfe road should be blamed for the mishap. Some people are choice-less about where to live. Some citizens live in unhealthy and dangerous areas, because they can not afford a comfortable and safe apartment.
The state government should be solely blamed for this mishap. Why on earth would they allow a filling station to be built close to drainage area, which hiders the easy passage of water.
Are there no urban and regional planners in the state, who should know that the location of the Filling station is not situated in the interest of safety.
l stand to be corrected!
You're right. But the bottom line still remain individual. Although, government act is the root of it all. Since the government has failed in its responsibilities, there is not wither-with might to control the societal acts.
It is just a pity that the victims of most of mishap one way or the order contribute to them. If government is irresponsible, can't individuals be? Most of these so-called individuals will later find themselves in power but no positive influence can they impact of their orientation.
l still will not agree with you, that the residents or individuals who suffers from most mishap in Nigeria, can really do any thing to help their situation.
If the government does not provide housing schemes at afforded rate and make some residential area habitable, there is little or nothing residents can do about their predicament. Especially, if there are no alternatives on where to relocate.
What do we say about citizens who built homes on rivers in the Niger-delta region, where the federal government taps most of the crude oil, which is Nigeria's highest source of revenue. Yet, the government have not provided any alternative as a place of residence for citizens in that region.
l am not saying, government should provide housing at no cost, but at low cost for its citizens. The government have failed woefully in providing the three basic needs of its citizens; Food, clothing and shelter.
If there is gainful employment for citizens, these three needs will be met.
The truth of the matter is that, Nigeria government pay lip service to its citizens.
