The management of Federal University Wukari has ordered the closure of the institution over the violent crisis that erupted in the university's host community.

According to a statement by the Director of Communications in the institution, Mr. Jerry Amah the closure is to ensure the safety of the staff and students living inside the Wukari town in Taraba state as a deadly crisis is raging in the area.

The crises which has led to the imposition of a 24-hour curfew in the town by the state government have a casualty figure of over 50 people with 22 already dead.

Students are advised to vacate the campus with immediate effect and proceed on a 2 weeks break until peace returns to the area.

The crisis started at the Christian Reformed Church of Nigeria, CRCN, around 6:30am on Sunday when some armed Hausa Muslims attacked the congregation with guns and other dangerous weapons in the church premises.

A member of the congregation who escaped with a bullet wound said, "many must have died as a result of the attack and the resultant stampede but some of us were lucky to have escaped alive with bullet wounds,".

Reacting to the development, acting Medical Director of the Makurdi FMC, Dr. Peteru Ihiundu said, "We have 32 patients that were brought in at a time with various degrees of injuries ranging from gun shot wounds, abdominal and head injuries and so on.
