Post by: emezico on Jul 03, 2011, 08:37 AM
The NLC strike threat is a welcome development. The states should respect the Federal government directives and implement the new minimum wage in their various states.

If the Federal government is not certain that state governments can pay such amount to civil servants, it won't press for the passage of the new minimum wage into law.

Following the two-week ultimatum issued by the Organised Labour and the Trade Union Congress for the implementation of the N18,000 minimum wage, finding have show that most state governments in Nigeria are panicking over the NLC strike threat.

According to survey carried out by newsmen, reports showed that many of the state governments are not ready to implement the new wage regime, especially if the Federal Government does not carry out their call for the removal of the fuel subsidy.

Few states are ready to start paying the new minimum wage after negotiation with their various trade unions. The states include: Lagos, Edo, Cross River, Delta, Ekiti, Akwa Ibom while Ondo state insists that, it can only pay N14,000.
