Finnish prime minister, Jyrki Katainen (cons), said that the Greek Parliament's approval of an austerity programme was a landmark decision and the only possible way to avert "a total catastrophe".

Katainen added that no one would have been able to help Greece with its debt woes if the country had not agreed to address its deficit.

Katainen said he was convinced that rejection of the austerity programme would have triggered another financial crisis affecting Europe as well as the rest of the world.
