Title: Ebola: Nigeria Confirms OAU Student Quarantined
Post by: Shola Sholaz on Sep 16, 2014, 10:27 PM
The Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, has confirmed that a student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, has been quarantined until results of his test for the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, is out.
.
The minister stated this in a statement Wednesday night by his spokesperson, Dan Nwomeh.
.
The student, whose name the minister did not disclose, had contact with Ikechukwu Enemuo, the Port Harcourt-based doctor who died of the virus. He had contact with the deceased at a naming ceremony, the minister said.
.
Mr. Chukwu also provided the current situation on the virus outbreak in Nigeria.
.
He said the total number of confirmed cases of EVD in Nigeria is 19, out of which Lagos had 15 while Port Harcourt had four.
.
Nigeria has successfully recorded 12 survivors of the deadly disease that has killed seven people since its outbreak in the country in July.
.
With 12 survivors who have now tested negative after testing positive, and seven dead, the minister said there is currently no confirmed case of the disease in Nigeria.
.
Mr. Chukwu, however, said 16 contacts are still under surveillance in Lagos, a drop from 350 people who have been discharged after completing the compulsory 21 days observation, thus testing negative for the virus.
.
He also said 490 contacts are under surveillance in Port Harcourt, a mixed group of the tertiary and quaternary contacts of the Liberian American, Patrick Sawyer, who brought the disease into Nigeria.
.
Sixteen of those in Port Harcourt have, however, been discharged.
