The governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, while addressing the 431 inmates of the Gusau maximum prison on Friday, disclosed that he was once remanded in prison custody for rebuffing a court order.

"I was to give witness and I refused to honour the court invitation. So, the judge felt, I committed contempt and directed I should be remanded in prison. I spent five days in prison custody from Thursday to Tuesday," Yari said.

Yari said because of his experience in prison, he knows what prison life was all about and charged the inmates to fear God and be of good behavior.

The Governor declared that the dilapidated skills acquisition centre at the prison will be rehabilitated so that the inmates would learn skills like carpentry, bricklaying, metal work, painting, electrical work etc.

'We want each one of you to have something to fall back on after completing your prison terms.

The governor donated 32 cows for Ramadan and N500,000.00 to the inmates, promising that each of them will be given two sets of clothes to be used to celebrate the Id-Fitir (Sallah).

What a good gesture! A reflection on his experience while in prison. It is just unfortunate that Nigeria prisons lack the requisite to rehabilitate inmates.
