Luka Modric can become Tottenham's highest paid player by signing a new £80,000-a-week deal.
The White Hart Lane board have decided to scupper bids from Manchester United and Chelsea by handing their skilful Croatia international midfielder a new five-year deal.
It will break their current pay controls and offer the potential for Modric to earn around £30million in basic salary and add-ons.
At the moment, Tottenham pay their highest-paid player about £65,000 a week and Modric is on £50,000 a week.
The Spurs offer may be lucrative by their standards.
