A U.S -based Lecturer, Mr Aondover Tarhule, has identified inadequate funding, tribal, religion and political sentiments as responsible for the dwindling fortunes in the Nigerian education sector.

Tarhunle, who made the observation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Kaduna, queried governments' inadequate budgetary allocation to the education sector. Tarhule is the Head of Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability, University of Oklahoma, U.S.

He told NAN that "funding is not optional, it is apt.

"The Nigerian governments either at the federal or the state level at the present time is not meeting the UNESCO recommended 25 per cent budgetary allocation to education.

"If we understand that an educated workforce is what is necessary to take this country to the next level, in terms of development, industrialisation, employment; then we will have no option but to put in more money into the education sector."
