The Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, disclosed to newsmen that the state will soon come out with modalities on how to merge the three universities in the state into one.

The three universities in the state are the University of Ado-Ekiti, located in the state capital; University of Science and Technology, Ifaki-Ekiti; and the University of Education, Ikere-Ekiti.

Fayemi added that the signing into law of the bill was as a result of the outcome of the report of the task force set up on the matter by the state government.

"We have already started the merging process. We set up a task force on the education sector and that report was presented to a wider stakeholders summit on education and that summit came to the conclusion that there was no way we could continue to run three universities.

"That is what we have done. We have gone to the legislature, asked the legislature for a merging law, what we now have, technically speaking, is Ekiti State university, rather than University of Science and Technology, Ifaki; University of Education, Ikere; or even University of Ado-Ekiti, that is the new position.

"Ekiti State University Law has been signed into law and the governing council is coming in place in another week. Once the governing council is in place, the details of the merger will now be fully worked out by the governing council," Fayemi said.
