TRAFFIC was held up for many hours yesterday in Lagos when a tanker fell into a ditch on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway and overturned.
The driver of the tanker was on his way to Apapa, but as he was trying to meander through the bad portions on the road, the tanker fell.
Donloswhope Emeji, a commercial bus driver, who was caught in the traffic, disclosed that he was on his way to Oshodi from Mile 2 when he met the traffic.
"All my passengers have gone; I am only left with my driver. The solution is for the government to help us to repair the road," he said.
Another commuter caught in the hold up, Frank Chigozie, said he was on his way to his house in Gbagada when he met the traffic.
"We have been here for the past three hours. There is the need for the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to do something about repairing the road, being a federal road," he said.
A stranded passenger, Biodun Adesina, blamed the bad state for the frequent accidents on the road in recent times.
"Just three days ago, a fuel tanker fell around Cocoanut Bus Stop. It took the effort of the Fire Service to prevent fire. Let the government assist us in repairing the road," he said.
Saka Adeyemi, a taxi driver, said: "I have been here for the past three hours. It is high time the government came to our rescue. The road is very bad."
Yang Joshua, the Provost Officer of Federal Fire Service on 3rd Avenue, Festac Town said he received a distress call and immediately responded with his men.
Meanwhile, following the warning by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States (US) that Lagos is under threat of 20-metre tsunami, Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola yesterday allayed the fears of residents, saying this part of the world does not lie on earthquake-prone region of the globe.
Fashola, who disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents, dismissed the warning, noting that there is no cause for alarm, hence the appeal to those sending SMS messages on the warning to desist from doing so.
