As a mark of its determination to put a stop to the embarrassing spate of building collapses, Lagos State on Thursday commenced the controlled demolition of structures it had earlier certified as structurally weak and unfit for human habitation.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Toyin Ayinde, told Punch correspondent late on Friday that officials of the ministry commenced the demolition of two buildings on Lagos Island on Thursday and another in Ebute-Meta on Friday afternoon.
He said that in all, 64 structurally weak buildings had been identified in the two areas, noting that they would first be subjected to rigorous tests to determine the extent of their weakness.
Those that fail the tests, according to him, will be demolished in a controlled environment in order to safeguard the lives of the residents and those living in adjourning buildings.
Honestly, this is a good step. Although, it may be painful to and unwelcome by the owners and developers/builders but it will send right signals to them for future. Standard will be more appreciated!
