Fake students pose as real, in a bid to rip off the state government.
Nemesis has caught up with 33,000 fake students of Delta State origin in various tertiary institutions.
They were detected out of the 55,335 students who registered online for the 2011 bursary, which attracted N20,000 per beneficiary.
Disclosing this on Wednesday after the state executive council meeting in Asaba, the state Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Hope Eghegha, said under the 2010 Student Special Assistance scheme, the government recovered over N80 million from fake students.
Professor Eghegha frowned on the situation where cheats could pose as students to defraud the government.
According to him, the sum of N637 million was approved by the state government for 28,849 students who were successfully screened for this year's scheme.
Students from 126 higher institutions benefited from the scheme.
The commissioner advised the leadership of National Association of Delta State Students to educate their members not to see the assistance as a national cake.

This has never been a new happening in the system. The bottom line still hangs ravaging poverty in the system. Students see it as opportunities to nourish their pockets financially aided by various student associations. I remembered my polytechnic days when non-indigenes claimed Ogun state bursaries.
