A staff audit committee constituted by the chairman of Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Mr Peres Peretu, has discovered the existence of 500 ghost and dead workers on the payroll of the council.
Addressing the public on the findings of the five-man committee headed by his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Mr Dibiya Ayakurai, in Yenagoa, on Monday, the council boss regretted that his local government had been losing a sum to N10million monthly on the ghost workers scam.
The report of the committee's findings, a copy of which was made available to the Nigerian Tribune, indicated that 29 dead indigenes of the council and 77 ghost workers, among others had been receiving salaries from the local government since 2003.
