Harry Redknapp has admitted for the first time that Luka Modric could be sold.
Chelsea are poised to return with an offer of £35million for the midfielder after having bids of £22m and then £27m rejected.
And Redknapp, who has fought furiously to persuade the little Croatian to stay, has conceded that Spurs cannot compete with the wages on offer at Stamford Bridge.
The Tottenham boss, who is close to to signing striker Emmanuel Adebayor on loan from Manchester City and midfielder Lassana Diarra from Real Madrid, said: "I want to see Luka here at the end of the window. Really.
"But if he is going to go, then you want him to go [quickly], then you get three or four players in.
"They are your options, really. Let's be honest. You either sell him, get the money and go and bring four players in - and have a better team, in all honesty - or you keep Luka, who is a fantastic player.
"I don't know where it will end up, in all honesty, but I know Luka will get on with it.
"You couldn't meet a better fella."
