Lawmakers cut short recess
WORRIED by the protracted sectarian crisis in Jos, the Northern Governors' Forum will hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 next week.
According to a statement, the chairman of the forum, Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State said the meeting would suggest ways of ending the cycle of violence that has engulfed the state in the last decade.
The statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary of the Forum, Malam Danladi Ndayebo in Minna yesterday expressed the forum's determination to end the crisis in which many people have died and property lost.
It condemned the spate of targeted killings in villages around Jos in the last few weeks, saying "this madness must stop now. "
Meanwhile, the Plateau State House of Assembly has cut short its recess to voice its position on the current security challenges facing the state.
Speaker of the House, Mr. John Clark Dabwan disclosed this at the weekend, saying that he had contacted all other members of the House who had agreed to meet today at the Assembly Complex to deliberate on the nagging security challenge confronting the state.
He said the Special Session is very crucial for members to voice their views on the matter.
The people of Plateau State have been told that dialogue is the only means of promoting peaceful co-existence in the state. Addressing journalists at the weekend, Commissioner for Information and Communications, Pastor Yiljap Abraham said the recently arrested suspects in Jos and environs are now facing the law.
The security council meeting was the first held at the weekend after the return of Governor Jonah Jang from overseas medical checkup. He thanked his Deputy, Ignatius Longjang and security agencies for containing the situation when he was away by damning the culture of impunity where the youths took the laws into their hands.
The information commissioner who briefed the press, said the council condemned the impunity whereby the miscreants took the laws into their hands by blocking high ways. He said the community and religious leaders should always hold their youths, adding that they should cooperate with the security agencies always to arrest the situation.
Abraham added that the council was disturbed at some reports from the media which are allegedly intended to sow seed of discord between the state government and the security agencies.
