Unable to hide their feelings over the slashing of the tuition fees payable at the Osun State
University (UNIOSUN) by the state government, parents of the students in the institution have expressed their gratitude to Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the state over the action.
Speaking during a thank you visit to the governor last Tuesday, the Chairman of the UNIOSUN Parents' Forum, Justice Jide Falola, who led other executive members, said that with the slashing of the fees, it is now relatively cheaper to sponsor children to the institution, unlike before.
According to him, what was being spent by the parents to sponsor one student in the university could now sponsor at least two students in the same institution, hence, access to university education had been broadened, saying that the parents have been empowered, as the money gained from the reduction of the fees would be used on some other profitable ventures.
Falola also lauded the governor over his idea of uniformity in the school fees among indigenes and non-indigenes, which he described as unique and incomparable nationwide. Acknowledging the efforts of the present administration to revamp education in the state right from elementary level, the leader of the team, noted that they are ready as stakeholders in the education system, to play their roles as stabilizing factor and take on any challenges the government might place before them.
Responding, Aregbesola promised that he would instruct that the backlog of contributions of local governments to the university be released. The governor, who reiterated the commitment of his administration to revamp education in the state from the basic level, expressed disappointment that majority of the people who have children in public schools have been neglected and un-catered for.
According to him, "We are working on a solution for those who had gone through poor basic education system, so as to redeem their deficiencies and further their studies in any other institution or centres of learning that will make them to compete with any students in the world.
"We are equally working on ensuring that those who are still in the system do not suffer the same hardship of education", he said.
He then called on the parents and the entire people of the state, to partner with the government, not only on UNIOSUN, but in the entire education sector, for the betterment of the society.
