The Federal Government on Monday in Abuja expressed concern over the increasing number of unaccredited medical schools in the country.
It said it had resolved to shut down any medical school which failed to get accreditation from the National Universities Commission after one year of its take-off.
Already, the Ministry of Health, has written to President Goodluck Jonathan on the matter.
The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said this when the National Association of Colleges of Medicine, led by the Provost, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Prof. Oluwole Atoyebi, visited him.
Chukwu said, "I am highly worried by the issue of accreditation of medical schools in Nigeria. I am happy that the Provost of the University of Abuja Medical School is here. So many things have gone wrong. I have discussed with the Minister of Education (Prof. Ruqquayat Rufa'i).
"I have written to her and have also written to the board and management of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada.
"It is sad that in this country we continue to admit our students to non-accredited programmes."
