SENATE President, David Bonaventure Mark, has called for a review of education policy, stressing the need to unburden the sector's guidelines formulation and focus more on regulating standards.
Mark lamented that inconsistent policies and poor funding have plagued the education sector and emphasised the need to pay serious attention to science education, which he noted would be a catalyst for rapid development in the country.
Mark spoke yesterday in Port Harcourt during the convocation ceremony of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), which was conducted seven years ago.
According to Mark, "I strongly believe that education provides the impetus to sustainable national development and growth. I am a firm believer that the most profitable investment you can make today and the best legacy we can give to our children."
Mark and High Chief Olu Benson Lulu Briggs, the Executive Chairman of Monopolo, were conferred with honourary doctorate degrees of law and business administration respectively.
On his part, Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers, noted that there is progress in the university unlike the past years when the academic standard of the school was going down.
He pointed out improvement in technology and infrastructure development since Prof. Barineme Fakae assumed office as Vice Chancellor of the institution.
