The Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Ibadan on Thursday dismissed the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the election of Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi.
The three-man panel, headed by Justice Abdulkadir Pindiga, described the petition as lacking in merit and speculative because of the inability of the petitioner to prove his allegations with enough evidence.
A cost of N10,000 was awarded against the petitioner.
Governor Ajimobi described his victory at the tribunal as a triumph of democracy and the rule of law.
Reacting to the judgment in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Festus Adedayo, Ajimobi said those fighting against him were fighting against God.
He said the judgment had further reaffirmed his belief that there were men of honour in the nation's judiciary.
The PDP had approached the tribunal to nullify Ajimobi's election on the strength that he possesses dual citizenship having allegedly acquired the citizenship of the United States of America (USA) as at the time of the April 26 election. It claimed that by his dual citizenship status, Ajimobi was not qualified to contest the said election.
The PDP also urged the tribunal to declare its candidate, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, the winner of the election having scored at least 25 percent of the votes cast in 26 local government areas as well as scored the second highest number of votes overall.
The governor denied the allegation, saying he did not hold the U.S citizenship.
