Former military Governor of Kaduna State, colonel Dangiwa Umar, yesterday urged former President Olusegun Obasanjo to take the path of honour and return back his GCFR to the federal government for his involvement in the sharp practices that characterised the sales of government assets.
In an interview with Daily Trust, Umar said for somebody who was involved in the act of looting the country to continue to be bearing its highest honour is most dishonourable.
"I am not surprised by the findings and recommendations of the Senate about the activities of the BPE. I have always known that the Public Enterprises Act of 1999 was being grossly violated. There was conflict of interest where Obasanjo became directly in charge of the sales of the federal government asset.
"The Senate's finding clearly indicates that the BPE directly reported to Obasanjo and this is what I am talking about, it is a violation of the Public Enterprises Act, which places direct control of the BPE under the chairmanship of the vice President. In an attempt to establish his credentials and reputation, Obasanjo set up agencies like the EFCC to fight corruption.
"We are optimistic that the President will implement the recommendations of the Senate to buttress his pledge of fighting corruption and the transformation of the country. In fact, the President has no option than to implement the recommendation if he wants to prove his sincerity about fighting corruption.
"With all these revelations, General Obasonjo should take the path of honour and consider returning his GCFR medal to the federal government unless he is able to counter the findings of the Senate. There are other sharp practices that are going on, which require further investigation especially in the oil sector," Col Umar said.
