Nasarawa State governor Umaru Tanko Almakura yesterday said the mass protest against the removal of subsidy by the Federal Government means shows that the policy is ill-timed and should be reversed.
Amakura said in a television programme monitored by Daily Trust that though the governors' forum supported the removal of subsidy, his party the Congress of Progressive Change (CPC) is opposed to the withdrawal of subsidy from petrol. He said the best thing for the government to do is to reverse the policy which saw the pump price of petroleum more than doubled.
Meanwhile, Daily Trust also learnt yesterday that a cabinet minister told President Goodluck Jonathan that the ongoing mass rally in support of the restoration of the withdrawn fuel subsidy and the subsequent reversal of the pump price to N65.00 per litre is so overwhelming and could have security and political implications.
A source however informed that the President responded by threatening that some of ministers would have to be dropped.
The president expressed concern that after due consultations with the ministers and state governors over the withdrawal of subsidy on petrol, some ministers could still recommend a reversal of the policy.
Jonathan was reported as saying he will contact the state governors who were a party to the decision to withdraw the subsidy to know if they are still with government.
