Summary: Women's World Banking (WWB) seeks an individual consultant to develop and manage the execution of a marketing strategy and implementation plan for a partner bank to promote a savings product to low-income women in Nigeria.

About Women's World Banking: WWB is an international microfinance support organization and network of 39 microfinance institutions in 27 countries. The mission of WWB is to expand the economic assets, participation and power of low-income women and their households by helping them access financial services, knowledge and markets.

About the Project:

•   Women's World Banking (WWB) is collaborating with a partner bank on a joint project to develop and pilot a savings product for the unbanked and under-banked in Nigeria, especially for women.

•   The bank's objectives are to develop an innovative and commercially profitable value proposition, to drive growth in the retail banking market through outreach to the market of un/der banked Nigerians.

•   During the project, a savings product will be developed and tested through two channels, including branches and a mobile banking platform. WWB and its partner bank will collaborate on customer research, product design, development of marketing, and a partnership strategy to support education and awareness.

Objectives & Responsibilities:

The consultant will leverage best practices in marketing financial services, mobile money and/or consumer goods, internationally and in Nigeria, to develop a marketing strategy and implementation plan for a savings product for low-income women in Nigeria.  

The objectives of the marketing strategy and plan are to drive awareness, customer acquisition and active savings behavior. Specific responsibilities include:

•         Assess the partner bank's current marketing capability and strategies for fit with low-income market, especially women and provide recommendations to enhance it

•         Assess the partner bank's media and communications strategy for fit with low-income market, especially women, and provide recommendations to enhance it

•         Develop a marketing strategy, including tactics, collateral, marketing manual and a media strategy, for a new savings product for low-income women

•         Advise on procuring, selecting and briefing of partner organization(s) for education and awareness program

•         Advise and provide inputs for a staff training and coaching program to be developed by WWB and the partner bank, to expand and strengthen marketing and field staff's capacity to promote the savings product

•         Develop performance metrics to assess the effectiveness of the marketing program

•         Propose required revisions to the partner institution's customer care strategy to ensure effective service provision to the new client segments of low-income women

Project Team:

•   The consultant will work with a small team from WWB, including staff members and field-based consultants, as well as staff from the partner bank and advertising agency.  

•   The consultant will report directly to the WWB Project Manager and work closely with other project managers and marketing staff.

Duration of Consultancy:The consultant will be procured for the duration of the project with an estimated total of 30 billable days.

Location of Work:

•   The consultant may be based in the United States or internationally.  

•   The consultant will be required to travel to Nigeria and to provide ongoing support to the project team on marketing.

Minimum Qualifications

•         Minimum of 7-years experience in marketing in financial services or consumer products

•         Marketing experience in emerging markets, in Africa and/or in Nigeria an advantage

•         Bachelor's Degree

•         Strong creative, writing, cross-cultural interpersonal, analytical and multi-tasking skills required.

•         Fluency in English

•         Demonstrated capacity to achieve results on the ground.

•         Ability to manage all expenses on a reimbursement basis

•         Ability to buy and maintain all appropriate insurances, including medical evacuation and security
