With a reported 30 million (http://allthingsd.com/20111121/tunein-the-sequoia-funded-radio-app-with-more-usage-than-pandora-and-spotify/) monthly unique users, the bragging rights of being the top iOS music app (http://gigaom.com/2011/11/11/tunein-radio-rises-to-the-top-among-streaming-music-apps/) last October and a slew of newly released auto integrations at CES (http://gigaom.com/2012/01/10/tunein-radio-takes-its-streaming-act-on-the-road/), the under-the-radar TuneIn (http://www.tunein.com) is sitting pretty. The service, which like iheartradio (http://www.iheartradio.com) takes terrestrial radio stations and streams them online, differentiates itself from other contenders in the music space like Pandora (http://www.pandora.com) and Spotify (http://www.spotify.com) by offering up traditional radio mainstays like DJs and contests, etc.
And as of this week the company is sitting a little prettier, on some freshly signed terms sheets for a new round of funding from existing investor Sequoia Capital (http://www.sequoiacap.com/) and new investor General Catalyst Partners (http://www.generalcatalyst.com/).
In addition to its previous undisclosed round of $6 million, the company has received between $20 – $30 million from the two investors, according to a source who knows what's up. I'm still not clear on the exact valuation or whether anyone else will be participating.
The "diamond in the rough" (http://allthingsd.com/20111121/tunein-the-sequoia-funded-radio-app-with-more-usage-than-pandora-and-spotify/) service had super humble beginnings, starting out as the Dallas-based RadioTime (http://inside.radiotime.com/) and then skyrocketing in usership after it acquired the popular iPhone app TuneIn Radio (http://www.tunein-radio.com/index.html).
TuneIn is available on the iOS, Android (http://tunein.com/mobile/)and almost everywhere else.
