QuoteLet me  today to thank all of you who have in your reactions and comments on this page urged me to run in the forth coming 2011 presidential elections. Like I said elsewhere, offering myself for further service is not my decision to make alone. It is one decision that I must take in solemn consultation with God Almighty and peoples constituencies across our nation. The decision must ultimately be based on clarity of conviction and vision.

It is in this regard that I want to thank the people of the North Central, South- South, North West, North East, South East and Southwest zones of the PDP for their encouragements, prayers and urgings.

We have launched the Power Road Map and have also made some progress in the areas of Electoral Reforms with the appointment of Prof. Jega, signing of the Electoral Act and the prompt release of 87.7 billion naira to INEC and peace in the Niger Delta with the commencement in Obudu of the reorientation of repentant militants.

I have also taken time to inform you of the progress made in tackling issues such as stimulating economic growth by providing generous credit facilities to the tune of 500 billion naira to the real sector, cleansing the financial sector with the signing into law of the AMCON Act to serve as a safety net against bad loans as well as the political support given to the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to take decisive action to protect investors in the capital market .

In the anti corruption war, I am pleased to state with a clear conscience that this administration has not interfered with the EFCC and the ICPC and I have instructed the Attorney General to treat EVERY Nigerian equally under the law with no sacred cows.

I also told you of the implementation of the one year Action Plan for the education sector to increase the capacity of the sector to attract funding and ensure that such funding is channelled into increasing the service delivery capacity of the sector.

Indeed I took time to enlighten you of our plans to pay living wages to ALL workers under the employ of the Federal Government in addition to the 150 billion naira set aside for the bail out of the textile industry with 30 billion naira of that already disbursed.

In addition to these, I gave you details of the progress we made in the aviation sector such that our efforts bore fruit with the Category 1 certification awarded  which means that Nigerian registered airlines and air crafts can now fly directly to ANY airport in the United States.

In the down stream sector of the oil industry I took the time to enlighten you of plans now in advanced stages to build new refineries so we can refine locally and export to fuel thirsty neighbours.

I also ordered the minister of Petroleum to clean up the sector so that exports can be maximized and further downstream to make fuel available in our filling stations.

I am constantly pleased to read your comments on this page testifying to the ease with which you now buy petrol for your cars.

These and many other programmes and plans I have shared with you to let you know that in as much as there is a frenzy of activities occasioned by the coming elections, I have not deviated from my primary responsibility which is to provide leadership for  that is geared towards maintaining law and order and ensuring the peace and economic progress of Nigeria and Nigerians.

I thank everyone and group that has so far endorsed me and this administration and say to you that your endorsement strengthens and inspires me to keep on serving Nigeria to the best of my abilities so help me God.

QuoteMost of you expressed delight with the Power Sector  but also indicated your anxieties that as good as they are they may go the way of previous reforms when there is a change of administration.

Yes, we have had that problem in the past and we have taken it into consideration which is why we have anchored these reforms by institutionalizing them with statutes which are firmly settled in our law books. Since these reforms are backed or will be backed by law, they have become the property of the Nigerian people.

This is why this administration is insisting on the respect and observance of the Rule of Law. If the reforms are Institutionalized and backed by law, everyone including state governments, civil society, the Private Sector, domestic financiers and global development partners can approach the Judiciary to ensure the institution is not tampered with.

Another thing we have done to make these reforms stand the test of time is consultation. Before we came up with these reforms, we consulted with all concerned parties including again local and state governments, civil society, the Private Sector, domestic and international financial partners and labour and professional unions.

We also engaged in multi-partisan consultation amongst the political elite which you also saw further demonstrated by the multi-partisan attendance at the unveiling of the Road Map.

Like Football all Nigerians are united in our insistence that "Let there be Light" in our country. So now that Nigerians have a Road Map that is securely anchored on laws, they now have the locus standi to approach the judiciary at any time if they feel that there is any interference to roll back or reverse the gains that have been made because though governments may come and go and individual whims and temperaments may change the law will remain and will be like the light house that guides the ship to shore.

Remember these are not Goodluck's Road Map, nor the PDP's Road Map. They are the Road Map for ALL Nigerians.

Here is my comment:

Power sector is now the most sensitive of our economy. If handled with care, fear of God, and respect for rule of law, it will surely be sanitised. Your excellency sir, It would nice if your administration concentrate on this sector and be a hero from it. If the challenges in the sector are overcome, many positive developments would be experienced in several other sectors of the economy. The dreams of industrialisation will be achieved. Unemployment will be an history. Fear of Insecurity will drastically reduced. Poverty will surely be surmounted. God Bless Nigeria.

Or what do you think?

Goodluck Jonathan: 04 September, 2010 at 07:00

QuoteMy brothers and sisters, I read your comments and some of you appear to have lost hope in elections.

Today I am asking you to have a renewed faith in Nigeria and her ability to conduct honest, free and fair elections that reflect the will of the people.

I am not asking you to have a faith that is based on nothing. No. ...I am asking you to have a faith in Nigeria that is grounded on the things that you see now happening in Nigeria of today. You see a new INEC. One that is not afraid to criticize me and the administration in authority when they feel that they have not gotten what they need; one that asks freely for every resource they need and gets it; one that is not stampeded to action but takes action at it's own pace because they know that they are independent.

We also have a new Electoral Act which makes it MANDATORY for ALL political parties to practise internal democracy which makes it virtually impossible for moneybags and godfathers to hijack the process.

Moreover, we now have provisions for elections to be held early enough such that disputes arising from it can be adjudicated by the Judiciary before the candidates are sworn in.

So, my fellow Nigerians, the era of the rule of law is finally and firmly upon us. We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we certainly know who holds tomorrow.

God holds tomorrow and from His mercies to Nigeria as indicated by the progress we have made in having secure institutions and established laws let us replace doubts with an informed hope.

QuoteIn furtherance of keeping you up to date with my stewardship over Nigeria, I want you all to know that in as much as this government has placed priority in three areas-Electoral Reform, Power and The Niger Delta-we are still working to make progress in other areas.

For instance, Government has just ordered books on Mathematics, Science and English Language to be distributed FREELY to public primary schools nation wide.

I take seriously the responsibility to prepare the future generation for leadership because I have become what I am because of education and if we are to combat crime and other anti social activities effectively we must educate our young people so that they are employable when they come of age and can earn a living because they are educated. As such, a life of crime will not hold much attraction for them.

QuoteI am deeply committed to the power sector reform and my promise to improve on Nigeria's electricity generation and enjoyment by our citizens shall remain a bond.

Our goal is to celebrate one day, then one week, then one month and ultimately one year and so on of uninterrupted electricity supply in our country.

This is not an empty promise, because since 1896 when electricity was first generated in Ijora Lagos till this era we have never had so much invested in the power sector in terms of political will, human and financial resources as well as reputations of high political office holders.

Again, I am committed to this road map, but as I said to you last week, to really get this road map off and running we must see it not as a Jonathan or the PDP's road map but as Nigeria's road map.

As such, I request your feedback as we progress on this journey. Talk to me on this page. Be my ears and eyes in the fields and in your communities.

If you perceive any shortcomings on the part of the Presidential Task Force on Power, Local and International Contractors or any public servant involved in the power sector, please bring it to my attention.

The buck stops at my desk and there will be no buck passing while God permits me to serve you and our country Nigeria.

This is a thoughtful and remarkable comment from President Goodluck Jonathan on religious tolerance and peaceful co-existence. Read and share with others.

Goodluck Jonathan: 08 September, 2010 at 19:07

QuoteIt has been brought to my attention that Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach USA plans to burn copies of the Qur'an sometime in September this year.

I hereby urge authorities in the United States and men and women of goodwill around the world to prevail on Pastor Jones not to do anything that would assault the sensibilities of our Muslim brothers and sisters. This action can not be justified at anytime and certainly is doubly unjustified coming at the holy month of Ramadan.

I would urge Pastor Jones to be mindful of the Golden Rule taught by Jesus Christ: Do unto others as you would want others to do unto you.

To my Muslim brothers and sisters, I urge you to show restraint while we deal with this issue as we continue to build and strengthen our fortress for religious tolerance and continuing peaceful co-existence.

QuoteMy fellow Nigerians, as I have said on this page and in public several times, the life of every Nigerian is the greatest of value to me. Your security is of utmost importance. The oath I swore to on the day I took office as President compels me to do what is proper in the interest of our country and citizens, therefore, I will use every constitutional power I have to protect the well being of Nigerians and the Nigerian nation.

The recent disturbances in some parts of the country leading to avoidable loss of lives is one too many. Our armed forces and security agencies have my total support in the performance of their duties, nevertheless, going forward it is not sufficient for us to be reactive on issues concerning the security of lives and property as well as the maintenance of law and order.

My expectations is that our armed forces and security agencies should be PROACTIVE. We must employ intelligence to nip crises at the bud even before it can occur. Bearing this in mind I have communicated my expectations to the new heads of our security apparatuses and it is my expectation that we would now experience a greater level of security of lives and property in ALL parts of Nigeria.

Not stopping there, I am also working with my cabinet and the entire governmental structure to improve the economy, pay living wages to workers, fight corruption, improve access to and quality of education and to provide stable power to jump start the real sector thus create much needed jobs.

This we are doing because we know that the real cause of insecurity and civil disturbances is poverty which brings economic and social pressures to bear on the masses resulting in incidences of insecurity and civil disturbances.

Government must work for your good.

QuoteThis administration recognizes that we have several challenges as a nation and we are working on resolving these as best we can. But there is some cheering news in the fact that our economy verifiably grew by 7% during the first half of this year.

Now that we have this momentum, we are not going to rest on our oars. This government has set out plans (which I have kept you abreast with on this page) to aggressively develop infrastructure, reform the power sector, create opportunities for our people to be employed through stimulating industrial growth among others.

We have taken steps to give support for the bail out of the Textile Industry and effective funding for the real sector of our economy. The expected end result is to grow the economy by at least 10% by the end of 2012.

Only four years ago we were celebrating a 4% economic growth and now we have a growth of 7%, so this target is certainly within reach and as we all work together we will hit this milestone.

Remember the key words are WORK and TOGETHER. When we bear this in mind and practise it, it is my experience that almost nothing will be impossible to us as a nation.

QuoteThe other day, I encouraged you my fellow country men to be optimistic about the future especially as regards electoral reforms and free and fair elections in 2011. I demonstrated that such optimism is based on factually evidenced progress in statute and structures on the ground. But that is not the only area for which we should be optimistic.

As you may have read, the Office of the Attorney General has begun the process of prosecuting those involved in the Haliburton bribe scandal. It serves our country no good to shield corrupt individuals or corporations.

From inception this administration gave a FREE hand to all anti corruption law enforcement agencies to perform their duties to the fullest extent permitted by law.

I sincerely want to urge my fellow citizens to be optimistic and believe in Nigeria as ultimately expectations tend to be reflected in reality, so if we expect and believe the best of Nigeria our expectations are likely to become reality.

QuoteLike most of us on this page, I read the details of the 2011 election time table released by INEC through the media. I am happy that the release of the time table has generated a lot of interest and comments from several quarters.

This is how it should be: We should have discourses and debates so as to engender the culture of dialogue and deep inquiry.

To me INEC is living up to its expectations but the major ingredient for free and fair elections in 2011 remain you and the role you will play.

The following are urgent things we all must do:
(a). Register to vote
(b). Encourage others over whom we have influence to likewise register. And finally
(c). Prepare to come out and vote for the candidate of our choice.

Don't stay home and think that your neighbour would do it, remember that bad governments are elected by good people who do not vote. And also be assured that rather than a consensus of the political elite producing leaders at all levels in 2011, what is expected is that it will be a consensus of the people of Nigeria as expressed in their freely given votes in a free and fair election that would produce leaders in 2011.

Read below another note on the Facebook wall of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Nigeria Will Be What Nigerians Make It

Dear friends and fellow Nigerians,

I have said before that Nigeria needs to be tied to her great potential rather than being tied to her past and the main focus of this administration has been to enable that environment which will allow the great potential of Nigeria to be realized.

On her way to realizing her foreseeable great future, it will be rather naive to expect that Nigeria will not meet with resistance from people who would prefer to make her a prisoner of her past. You see, in life, there are two ways you can think. Some thinking can be likened to a computer accessing it's own memory. Other thinking is deeper and more sustained and can be likened to a computer accessing the World Wide Web. The first type is shallow, and is based on the past memory stored somewhere and draws from a limited body of knowledge that is cut off from the mainstream and can quickly become stale because it does not take into consideration that society is organic and grows with the people as they mature. The latter is a deeper thinking which connects to other deeper thinkers who are in tune with current trends and mood and reflects the potentials of a people. This is the type of thinking that builds great nations, great leadership and an even greater followership.  This has been fundamental to paradigm shifts in nations, moving them from underdeveloped to developing and eventually developed status.

Fellow citizens, we must not mistake or be mistaken, Nigeria will be what WE make it and not what OTHERS say it will be. We have already come together as one indivisible nation. Please let us shun detractors who would prefer us to stagnate in this unacceptable state. No one or people can stop Nigeria and Nigerians from arriving in that home of the great and happy future that is our destiny.

QuoteAs we progress towards our 50th anniversary as an independent nation and a transition in 2011, one thing we as Nigerians have to note is that if we must have better results  in the next 50 years, we need to change the way we have always done things. For instance, we can no longer rely on individuals to drive peace and progress in Nigeria. We need to over the next 50 years concentrate on building strong institutions and systems that will drive our transformation to a greater and better nation. This is because individuals come and go, but institutions and systems remain behind. Also, whereas individuals do change depending on their moods, whims and caprices, an institution is stable especially if it is built and operated on the rule of law that is anchored on fairness and justice.

QuoteOne of my greatest goals in government is to restore the dignity of the Nigerian nation  and her citizens. I grew up at a time when Nigeria was led by a man I would classify a specimen of gentle-manliness. Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa led a government that saw Nigeria stand tall as a nation  that was not divided along narrow interests.

As a teenager, my patriotism was further fired up by that phrase from General Yakubu Gowon to the effect that 'to keep Nigeria One is a task that must be done'. General Gowon made that statement over 40 years ago, but it is as true today as it was then. Nigeria is one Nation and it is our determination  to keep it so. The biggest task before us in the now is to build this Nation of many peoples into an indivisible Nation where the people united  in one will be greater than the sum of all her constituent parts. We must make the "We the People" call as enshrined in the Supreme Statute of our land, the constitution, come to life in words and deed. Dear Compatriots, my primary goal in government which must not be mistaken is to return Nigeria to "We the people".

QuoteYou may perhaps have heard about the flood disasters affecting parts of Sokoto and Kebbi states. Before I travelled for the U.N. General Assembly meeting, I had cause to personally visit the affected areas to sympathize with the victims. I saw first hand the extent of the damage and I immediately ordered the army corp of engineers to mobilize to the locality and commence repair works.

I have also this week authorized the release of 1.7 billion Naira as an intervention grant for the affected areas. The grants are to be expended on reconstruction of damaged roads, culverts and bridges; scour inspection and survey of piers and abutments of the severely eroded bridge across the Sokoto River; and urgent after-flood protection study of the affected areas.

I hereby call on all Nigerians to remember the victims and survivors of this tragedy in our prayers.

QuoteBUILDING ON THE FOUNDATIONS OF UNITY AND PROGRESS: AN ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN ON THE OCCASION OF 50TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS TODAY 1ST OF OCTOBER 2010.

Fellow Citizens,

Today, 1st October, 2010 marks the 50th Anniversary of our independence from Britain. It is with a deep sense of humility and gratitude to the Almighty that I address you this morning. On this day in 1960 the heroes of the nationalist struggles and all Nigerians were full of hopes and dreams. The citizens of the new country danced in colourful celebration of the newfound freedom. Nigerians were filled with expectations as the Union Jack was lowered and the green-white-green flag was raised in its place. A new country was born. A new journey had started on a road never taken before. The future was pregnant with promise.

Quote I commiserate with the victims of the flood in Lagos and Ogun states. I know what a trying experience you are going through because I recently visited flood victims in Sokoto and Kebbi states to experience first hand their pain. I want to assure you that just as the Federal Government came to the aid of the victims in the Northwest in a timely manner we will also come to your aid. Already, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been directed to immediately provide relief to the victims. This is a palliative measure pending when the government will have assessed the full extent of the damage in order that we may take short term measures to fully alleviate the sufferings of the victims and long term measures to prevent a re-occurrence as much as is humanly possible.

Thank God For Little Drops of Water

Little drops of water it is said, make a mighty ocean. I believe this. We are making progress with the new super grid to transmit power through out Nigeria while also moving full steam ahead in building new power plants and maintaining the old ones. However, we still have to think nationally and act locally and make sure that where there is opportunity we make use of it to give power to Nigerians by whatever means we can. This is why I have committed the Federal Government to develop coal-powered and solar turbines to generate power for the Nsukka campus of the University of Nigeria and its environs.

I remember that on this page I took you down memory lane and x-rayed some of the challenges we have faced in the last fifty years. I remember that I did say to you that if we want a different and better result for the next fifty years we have to do some things differently. In my opinion, the most important is this-as we enter into the next fifty years of our national existence, all of us, both the leaders and the led have to move from being onlookers to being stake holders in the Nigerian project. I have thought hard and long about this and I believe that we can only make this paradigm shift if we all and especially the leaders at all levels begin to assess our social services in Nigeria.

Today, President Goodluck Jonathan noted on his Facebook page, a congratulatory message to Mr. Kayode Fayemi. Please read.

Goodluck Jonathan 16 October 16:40

QuoteI want to seize this opportunity to congratulate the candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria in the 2007 gubernatorial elections in Ekiti State, Mr. Kayode Fayemi, who has been declared the rightful winner of the elections. The Federal Government which I head accepts the verdict of the Court of Appeal and has sinc...e put machinery in motion to give effect to the judgement in demonstration of our belief in the supremacy of the rule of law. I commend Mr. Fayemi's patience and commitment to the cause of justice even though I regret that it took him so long to get it. The delay in reaching a final determination of this case once again exposes loop holes in our electoral laws which we have to plug. I am glad to note that these loopholes have caught the eyes of the Legislative arm of government which is working with other arms of government to amend current legislation to ensure a resolution of these issues. Finally, the Federal Government notes the pronouncement of the Court of Appeal on the shortcomings in the conduct of the elections and will take corrective measures to address the shortcomings of those individuals and institutions under the control of the Federal Government and we will urge the INEC to take corrective measures to address those concerns which relate to them since the government is in no position to interfere with an independent body. Finally I call on both parties to the dispute to accept the verdict of the court and work together on the basis of no victor no vanquished so that the people of Ekiti State can continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy as they did under the previous administration of ex governor Segun Oni without rancour and bitterness.

Yesterday, President Goodluck Jonathan reported her visit to the victims of Ogun and Lagos floods and I quote!

QuoteI have just returned from visiting victims of the floods in Lagos and Ogun state to see first hand the extent of the damage caused by the deluge and find out what the urgent needs are so the Federal Government can offer assistance. Earlier, I had directed the relief agencies under Federal control to do what is needful in the immediate while we look at long term solutions to possibly prevent recurrences. I told the victims of the flood that the Federal Government will support them by way of further assistance and this will be channelled through the State Governments of the affected areas. In finding solutions, we will examine all the suggestions made by leading experts including urban and regional planners, environmentalists and scientists among others. It is our resolve that this reoccurring problem which has caused so much pain to our citizens is eventually brought to end.

Today, President Goodluck Jonathan reported about Total Radar Coverage of the Nigerian Airspace Project (TRACON) and I quote!

QuoteNigeria's airspace is now totally covered by radar as a result of the Total Radar Coverage of the Nigerian Airspace Project (TRACON). What this means is that Nigeria now have the technology to reduce air disasters to the barest minimum and to police and protect Nigeria's airspace from unauthorised entry.

Goodluck Jonathan's administration has taken steps to improve health and safety conditions in the aviation sector which has seen improvements that have been noticed internationally as evidenced by the International Category 1 Safety Assessment Certificate recently granted to Nigeria by the U.S Federal Aviation Authority (FAA).

Yesterday, President Goodluck Jonathan said "All For One and One For All" and I quote!

QuoteI have been in Bayelsa state visiting with the people and commissioning several projects completed by the state government. In the cause of the state visit, I interacted with citizens and other stakeholders of host communities who raised issues regarding environmental pollution arising from oil industry activities. Now let me state that I am committed to helping all host communities get a better deal and this is not limited to the Niger Delta. One of the first things I did when I assumed by the grace of God and the Nigerian people this office as President of Nigeria was to sign the HYPPADEC Bill in to law in order to halt the years of neglect suffered by the host communities to the power industry in Niger, Kebbi, Kogi and Kwara states and enable them get something from the resources that God in His infinite wisdom has blessed them with. I believe that the people of these states states are as deserving as people any where of some form of derivation and I will continue to take steps to ease their burdens occasioned by the environmental issues caused by the power industry.

QuoteDear friends and fellow compatriots, as we approach the 2011 elections I want to as a responsible leader prepare your minds for the coming months and what to expect. The leadership of any nation is a highly coveted position and more so when that nation is Nigeria, the largest black nation on earth and so richly endowed with human and natural resources. As such, as the competition as to who becomes President in 2011 gathers momentum, it is to be expected that some persons will naturally begin to be dangerously anxious to the extent of hitting some of us below the belt. For me, I care not about my personal safety, it is the safety and security of our citizens with regards to our age long aspirations to development and advancement that must be of concern. This election, I have said again and again is not about me, it is about Nigeria and the future of her great citizens.

This is the first time in 30 years that a power project of this magnitude has been commissioned in Kano and I want to assure the people of Kano and the rest of Nigeria that this is what I meant when I made a commitment to promise Less and deliver More. I would rather demonstrate what we are doing by working quietly and let you see the results than talk about it.

QuoteI had earlier in a note entitled 'Farewell to Do or Die Elections' to you my friends and to the larger Nigerian society pledged my willingness to play politics without pain. In furtherance of that, you may want to note that the Jonathan/Sambo campaign team has been touring the country and having dialogues in every zone of the nation. Since we believe in persuasion over coercion, our team has also visited opposition party strongholds and chieftains. Now we have not stopped there. I as President and one who has declared my interest in the 2011 Presidential elections have "without bitterness" and rancour received many of the aspirants who have thought it necessary as protocol demands to pay me a visit to intimate me of their Presidential ambitions. And those who have not thought it necessary continue to enjoy my good will.

QuoteLast year Valentine Uche Chukwuma asked what my plans were for itinerant scholars found mostly in Northern Nigeria and commonly referred to as Almajiri. Though I responded then, I want to give further feedback of the fact that the FG by my direct intervention made provision this year to build boarding houses for them so they learn under a conducive environment and grow up to be adequately prepared for life.

I make a commitment today to Nigerian women that if by the grace of God and the votes of the Nigerian people I am elected into office as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria I will devote 35% of all appointments to women. "To those with friends and family in Libya please let the news that I have instructed the minister of foreign affairs to immediately embark on the evacuation of Nigerian citizens from Libya just as was successfully done in the case of Egypt calm your fears. In furtherance to my directive that Nigerians stranded in Libya be immediately evacuated, I want family and friends of the victims to know that 500 of the 2000 stranded victims have landed in Abuja while the rescue operation will go on until everyone willing to return is brought back safely. Half A Million Reasons To Listen To You, by Goodluck Jonathan
Monday, March 7, 2011 at 7:24pm

I would like to address the question asked by Constant Nosa Olotu who asked if I read the comments on this page and what impact they have on me. When I created this profile on June 28th, 2010, I had the intention of bypassing the protocol that surrounds me and communicating directly with the Nigerian people. And I have dutifully done this consistently and this has been probably one of the most rewarding experiences in my life as a public servant because I am now able to know what the Nigerian people think on any given issue. So to answer Nosa directly, yes, I read your comments. I obviously cannot read all due to the number, but I take my time to skim through comments.

If you look at several decisions I have taken, it would be apparent to the observant that this is really the case. Over the months, I have taken my facebook friends comments into account in decisions I have taken concerning national football, security, economic policy and foreign affairs. Someone said, I made history by being the first Presidential candidate in the world to make a declaration of my intention to contest on facebook! This goes to show you the level of importance I attach to those who have taken the time to not only be my friends on facebook but to make comments and draw my attention to issues that I would hitherto not been made aware of. For example, I learnt about the property Nigeria owns in San Francisco, California through one of you, a youth named Tuokpe Onuwaje and was able to take appropriate action as a result of that knowledge. I have also received on the spot information about disturbances and other happenings from eye witnesses on this page and this has shortened government's response time.

Beyond your comments here, I also take time to visit your external sites where you provide links to them on this profile and I busy myself with learning from your perspectives on Nigeria. I particularly enjoy visiting the Nigeria Village Square (Nigerian Village Square (http://nigeriavillagesquare.com/)).  Even though most of the comments there tend to be critical I have found that truth abounds more in criticism, especially where it is constructive, than in praise. I must commend this site and its operators.

If you recall, I did mention on this page that I want my mind to be plugged into yours and yours into mine in much the same manner as the world wide web is connected to everyone via the Internet so that we can make government in Nigeria an information super highway that functions for the sole purpose of making Nigeria a much better place than we met it.

Today, over half a million Nigerians are friends of mine on this profile. Nothing could bring me more joy particularly as my friends cut across every nook and cranny of this great country and every strata of society. From  all of you on this page I draw inspiration and get ideas that help me govern better and love Nigeria more.

Finally, it is not lost to me that very few world leaders have as many as half a million friends. In fact, I am advised that only President Barack Obama has more fans than I among elected Presidents. For this I am very grateful to you my friends and I am further inspired to give heed to your comments and questions on this page. Thank you.

There are only two types of people in Nigeria: Good or Bad and not Northerners or Southerners. Assess people by their character which they control not by their place of origin which they cannot control. God made us and placed us in the locality where we were born. To discriminate against any human based on place of origin is to question the wisdom of God. And the wisdom of God is beyond the wisdom of man.

That is why in the history of Nigeria NO OTHER administration has budgeted the amount we have allocated to the sector. Nigeria is not going to grow rich from oil. I thank Nigerians for coming out to vote. Of major importance however, is peace. Very little can be done in an atmosphere of strife. There is need to allow the rule of law operate unhindered, to stop pointing fingers at each other and point instead in the direction of progress. We need to begin with the end in mind and start from our family, then our community and make peace and then peace will make progress.

May Day Greetings to the Nigerian Worker

Dear Nigerian Worker,

We have made an investment into our future by voting in leaders at all levels over the past month. Now let us make a further investment in belief.  The team I will put together  will work for Nigeria, but for Nigeria to work at her optimal best there is need for everyone of us to believe in Nigeria and work as a team because irrespective of the outcome of last month's elections, my outlook has and shall continue to be that in a contest amongst brothers there will be no victor and no vanquished. We must all make a paradigm shift to a win/win mentality. When we do, we will of necessity change the conversation from-how will President Goodluck Jonathan change Nigeria-to-how will I the Nigerian worker (I specifically want you to insert you name here) change Nigeria?

I intend that every promise I made on the campaign trail must be actualised over the next four years and I ask that you and the government work as a team to achieve this.

Let no one be in doubt, there is work ahead of us. It is not going to be a party, rather it will be a case of rolling up our sleeves and getting to work so it is most auspicious that May Day is coming almost immediately after the elections to remind all those who have been elected of the task that awaits them.

Some of you may recall that in the conversations I have been having with you on this page over the last year, I did say that one of my desires for Nigeria is that the growth of our economy should be driven by the production of our people and this will only happen when we make a substantial investment in the Nigerian people by way of increasing access to and the quality of education, working with the Private Sector to improve on electricity generation and distribution and motivating our workers by ensuring that the New Minimum Wage as enshrined in the Minimum Wage Act is implemented throughout the length and breadth of Nigeria.

On this May Day 2011, I want to again assure Nigerian workers that having signed the Minimum Wage Act, I will not be slack to implement it at the Federal level and work synergistically with other tiers of government as well as the Private Sector to ensure that not only do we do right by our workers on the matter of wages, but we take every care within available resources to lift up their conditions of service and ensure that the dignity of labour is not just enhanced  in Nigeria but becomes a pride because therein lies the key to the growth of Nigeria's economy which key is (to paraphrase our National Anthem)-the labour of our workers present.

So today, I salute the Nigerian worker and organised labour and thank you for your part in making the just concluded elections a success and to let you know that you have a partner in progress in the administration that I lead.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Nation Remembers a Leader That Served

A year ago, I lost a friend and brother, and although I suffered a great personal loss, it was nothing compared to that suffered by Nigeria. My late great leader, Umaru Musa Yar'adua died a year ago today and though he went too soon, he left an indelible record of service and modelled the expected behaviour of that type of statesman Africa needs to get from where she is to where she ought to be.

Today, I, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan,  pray for the repose of the soul of our late leader and again express Nigeria's appreciation to the family he left behind for the selfless leadership he provided this great nation. May God bless his soul and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

To all who participated in last month's elections, remember this-In a contest amongst brothers there are no winners or losers. My message therefore to the leaders who emerged is this-We are to lead all in our jurisdiction whether they voted for us or not, like lady justice, our eyes must be blindfolded when it comes to rendering services to the governed.

Enhancing Our Oneness

The elections are over and as I said, everybody won so there is no need for despair. Yes, there is a need for celebration by all in Nigeria but this must come with a closing of the ranks.  And how do we close ranks? Well for one, do not think that you performed your sole democratic responsibility when you voted. No. That was only the first step in the process of democracy. We have to be conscious that democracy is not a zero sum game. Democracy means that the majority enthrones a leadership that must still work with the cooperation of that majority to take care of EVERYBODY's interest and move the country forward. In Nigeria under my leadership no voter shall be left behind irrespective of how he/she voted.

So, what do we do now? It is now up to us to willingly work together to enhance our oneness until there are none amongst us who do not see themselves as part of that one and the only way this can be achieved is by the practice of tolerance which inevitably means that we must not just preach 'no winner, no loser'  but must also practice what we preach and I give my word that that practice will begin with me and I urge all elected leaders and all those who voted during last month's election to also tow this line.

In the 80's we heard of Glasnost (Openness) and Perestroika (Restructuring) from Gorbachev and the Berlin Wall came down. In Nigeria, there is a breath of Fresh Air ushering an era of Transformation and Transparency and the walls of Corruption will be brought down not just by the government but by you the good people of Nigeria.

Talking About the Economy

Certainly inflationary trends do concern me and that is why I personally monitor them. In recent years they have been within manageable bounds and as an administration we intend to gradually bring it down even as we maintain a steady GDP growth. We are looking good for achieving both objectives this year and our projected GDP growth of 7% is amongst the best projections in the world for 2011. However, we still need the buy in of Nigerians in this endeavor which is why I want to urge all Nigerians to as much as possible patronize Nigerian made goods.

I do understand that there are products that we do not yet produce in Nigeria and the government is working to address that. This takes time. But while we work on that, we all can make a contribution to Nigeria's progress by making a conscious effort to patronize Nigerian made products rather than foreign goods in cases where a Nigerian alternative exists.

Some ask why we are building new universities. The reason being that when I consider what we spend on subsidizing fuel (about a trillion Naira annually) my heart bleeds and I would rather spend that money subsidizing education because while petrol is burnt up in a car's engine and is gone, your mind never burns up the education it receives. As a leader, I would rather teach Nigerians how to fish (education) rather than only give my people fish (fuel).

On my update yesterday regarding my promise to build new universities (some are already being built as we speak), many commented that they prefer jobs. However, as government focuses on infrastructure and improves access to education and credit, which is what we are doing, youths will be empowered to create jobs for themselves rather than simply look for jobs. Skills not paper qualifications are the essence of education. I am beginning with the end in mind by investing in education.

As we mark ten years of GSM mobile services this week, it is heartening that Nigeria has grown from less than a million lines to over 90 million lines with 70% of Nigerians having access to phones. It cost 150,000 Naira to get connected before 2011. Today it takes 100 Naira. This week we kicked off the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) which is a vehicle initiated by this administration to secure the future economic well being of Nigeria and Nigerians by investing in Infrastructure, ensuring future availability of investment capital through creative investments in long term assets and insuring the integrity of future budgets by setting aside funds to be used as last resorts... to ensure fiscal stability. We have provided a seed capital of $1 billion to kick start the fund as well as established three sub funds- the Nigeria Infrastructure Fund; the Future Generations Fund and the Stabilisation Fund which will be the pillars of the SWF. It is time to start creating wealth and opportunities for generations of Nigerians yet unborn because we all know that they will be born. We also must creatively stimulate job creation for the current generation of Nigerians and we have begun to make progress in that regard with initiatives like the Youth Enterprise With Innovation in Nigeria (YouWin) initiative, a planned reduction in recurrent expenditure and an unprecedented first line allocation for education in the Appropriation Act. We must make those necessary sacrifices that will prepare Nigeria for a changing world where investments flow to the most desirable locations and in doing this the buck stops with me.

I just returned from Australia where I attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Perth. While in Perth, I attended and delivered the keynote address at the Commonwealth Business Forum with the theme "Unleashing Africa's Potentials: A New Vision". Part of this new vision is that even as we want foreign investors to come to invest in Nigeria we must also look inwards with a vi...ew to doing what is required to cut waste in our society and spend the savings on those things that really impact the lives of the everyday Nigerian. As Nigerians, we want power, good roads, good schools and good homes to live in with our families but we need to understand that if these things are to be a reality Nigeria cannot keep doing the same things we have always done. It is only by prudently managing our resources in such a way that more investments are going into regenerative ventures rather than consumption that we can 'Unleash Africa's Potentials' and ensure that in future summits of the Commonwealth we no longer talk of just potentials rather we would be talking about achievements and potentials fulfilled.

In Nigeria we are taking and are set to take tough economic decisions that will affect everyone, however, we are doing this for the good of the country because we have to think of the present and future generations of Nigeria. This is the major reason why this administration is making allowances for investments in job creation initiatives, infrastructural development as well as intelligent future savings. And the world is taking note. Last week, the global ratings agency, Fitch Ratings, revised Nigeria's ratings upward in all economic indicators. This is good news and an endorsement of Our economic reforms which we will keep at until its positive impact is felt by all Nigerians.

When I assumed the mantle of leadership of Nigeria on the 6th of May, 2010, one of my personal decisions was to prioritize education (being a teacher myself) and the welfare of the Nigerian people (health, the economy and energy security). This explained why the first budget under my watch had the highest allocation going to education and the people's welfare. And I am glad today to report that t...here has been progress.

For instance, the United Nations just released it's Human Development Index which shows a 10% rise in the life expectancy of the average Nigerian from 47.56 years to 51.9 years. The report also corroborates this administration's findings to the effect that infant mortality rates have significantly improved while access to education while still poor has also improved. I assure Nigerians that this is only a beginning. Things will definitely improve and will keep improving. I again refer you to my inaugural address where I promised that I would "never, never let you down" so help me God. That was my promise then and it is my promise for today and tomorrow.

On April 22nd 2010, when I signed the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Bill 2010 into law, I assured Nigerians that the bill will "address the compelling need for us as a nation to have indigenous participation in the oil industry". Today, I am pleased to note that those words have come to pass with the recent award by Shell Petroleum Development Corporation of a $50 million contr...act to an indigenous firm, SCC Nigeria limited, for the manufacture of line pipes in furtherance of the local content law. This contract which would have been given to a foreign company but for the Local Content law will keep jobs in Nigeria and increase the inflow of foreign exchange into our nation with all the attendant multiplier effects on the economy. This is a fulfillment of the vision I have for Nigeria which is that our laws, resources and government should be dedicated to creating an enabling environment that brings out the creativity already resident in the Nigerian citizen. This is also the reason why this administration introduced the Youth Enterprise With Innovation (YouWin) initiative. I want Nigerians to be the first line beneficiaries of the resources of Nigeria and as God gives me strength, I will ensure that this is the major preoccupation of this administration.

Under my watch, Nigeria will fulfill her commitments to her friends and allies and the general International Community. And one of the most brilliant minds that ever lived, Albert Einstein, established that we cannot keep doing the same things and expect different results. Thus, if we must have Transformation (and we will have it) there must be changes in how we do things. For instance, we must transform from being a net importer of food to being s...elf sufficient then a net exporter of food. This is possible. In the past two weeks, I have been eating only Cassava bread and I will continue to do this until I leave the State House. We must begin to look inwards and wean ourselves off those products which we can produce locally even if we might have some pains in the short to medium term. We must have gains in Nigeria, but sometimes there is no gain without pain and no Transformation without citizen participation. So let us all prepare to make small changes, from me the President to every Nigerian. And if there is one thing I have learnt, it is not to underestimate the big differences small changes can make.

Quote
I am gratified at the news that the International Social Security Association (ISSA) has recognized and awarded Nigeria for the best intervention in reducing Infant and Maternal Mortality in Africa. This is an acknowledgement of the deliberate efforts by government to invest resources in sectors that enhance the Human Development of Nigerians and was also recently validated by the United Nations D...evelopment Programme's 2011 Human Development Index report which also established that in 2011 Nigeria made the most progress ever in growing the Life Expectancy of her citizens from 47.56 years to 51.9 years which represents a 10% increase in the life span of the average Nigerian. Why should a mother die during childbirth if we can help it? Why should an innocent child coming into this world die for no fault of his/hers? It is easy to take these steps of progress for granted, but we should remember that health is wealth and I personally believe that the transformation agenda should include intangibles like improved healthcare in addition to tangibles like improved infrastructure which we are also working on.

Today, I want to congratulate all Nigerians on the successful launch of Nigeria's satellite NigComSat-1R. This satellite will enhance our nation's communications system and increase Internet bandwidth throughout the federation while substantially reducing the over $1 billion cost incurred from the usage of foreign owned satellites for e-commerce activities of both governmental and private sector u...sers all of which are a fulfilment of the goals contained in our nation's 25-year National Space Development Road-map. There cannot be Transformation without technology and the technological benefits from this satellite will flow to all Nigerians whether rural or urban dweller and would also provide the infrastructure needed to provide cashless e-commerce transactions for all Nigerians thus opening up Nigerian businesses and enterprises to markets that are not limited by space or time.

A concensus emerged after the civil war that we the people of Nigeria will live together in peace under God our creator. When I took the oath of office on the 29th of May 2011, the constitution of our republic reminded me that the primary duty of government is to secure life and protect property of all citizens.

Although the security challenges we face today is of a type and make never before experienced in our land, I have continued to work with all men and women of good will to stave off this threat to our union. I want to thank all Nigerians who through prayers, facebook messages and letters have encouraged us to remain undaunted in bringing to a close this challenge. Every option known to human civilisation especially the unbiased enforcement of law and order as well as dialogue will be deployed to finding a lasting solution to this present threat.

Let me also use this post to thank the men and women who serve our country in various security formations at this trying time. Your sacrifices and duty to Nigeria is greatly appreciated. It is true that security operation strategies are not things you discuss in the open, I want to inform you my friends on facebook that these gallant men and women have prevented and forestalled several situations that would otherwise have led to more national misery and pain. As the security forces close the gap and build up capacity to meet these national and international crimes against our common humanity, I want to request all patriots to give them every support needed.

May God bless Nigeria.

QuoteMy dear Compatriots,

I greet you all, especially our Moslem brothers and sisters, as we commemorate the anniversary of the birth of the Holy Prophet Mohammed (SAW).

As we celebrate the anniversary of the Prophet's birth, I urge all Nigerians to collectively reflect on the virtues and ideals which he exemplified and taught. The proper internalization of these virtues and ideals will undoubtedly benefit our nation immensely as we confront current security and developmental challenges.

I sincerely believe that we will make much faster progress towards the realization of our shared vision of a strong, united and prosperous nation if more of our people imbibe the Prophet's lessons of peace, peaceful co-existence with others, tolerance, honesty, selflessness, sincerity, justice, equity and fairness to all.

My administration greatly appreciates the untiring effort being made by our religious and traditional rulers to foster national unity and promote the peaceful coexistence of all Nigerians in the face of current challenges and I urge them to do more in this regard.

I also seize the opportunity of this occasion to assure all Nigerians once again that my administration remains fully committed to the successful implementation of its agenda for national transformation.

We shall continue to do all that we can in the coming months to curb corruption, eliminate waste and redirect national resources to indentified high priority areas such as public infrastructure, power supply, transportation, agricultural development, education and other sectors that will have a direct and positive impact on wealth creation and employment generation.

I thank you all for your continuing support and understanding in spite of being called upon to make additional sacrifices for national development recently.

Remain assured that all my actions as President are motivated by a burning desire to significantly improve the lives of the people of this country within the tenure of my administration.

With your support and God's guidance, I will succeed.

May God Almighty continue to bless, guide and protect our dear country.

I wish you all happy Eid-El-Maulud celebrations.

Last May I signed the Freedom of Information Bill into an Act. This piece of legislation has been long time coming. On the occassion of the signing I stated my "commitment to run a transparent, open, sincere and accountable government" within the rule of law and the protection of our common destiny.

In taking the commitment of transparency to heart I gave my word to the Nigerian people that this administration would put in place policies, institutions and structures so as to ensure transparency in every sphere of our governance trajectory. I believe that the mandate Nigerians gave to me following the election that was acclaimed by both local and international observers as well as a majority of the Nigerian people as free, fair and transparent is to do all within my constitutional powers for the good of our country. My dear friends on facebook, this administration has commenced a series of reforms in many areas including agriculture, power, energy, security, education among others and I want to specially request your support in prayers so as to ensure the success of these initiatives. Regardless of the orchestrated distraction, I will continue to place national interest above partisan politics for it is not about Goodluck Jonathan as an individual it is about Nigeria in the collective. It is not only about the present it is also very clearly, about our future too. I want to call on all those who may continue to view issues only from the prisms of partisan politics to take a break. Election campaigns are over, it is the season to deliver on good governance. In all the areas we have slated for reforms, we have, regardless of party, ideology or other interest, assembled and will continue to do so, very distinguished men and women of outstanding pedigree to carry out assignments in our nations interest. We must reward and call to service excellence and patriotism at all times.

Today, I inaugurated the board of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) under the leadership of Dr. Christopher Kolade.

I also had the great privilege of kicking off the Public Works Women and Youth Empowerment Programme which is an intervention programme designed to employ 370,000 youths in the year 2012 with 30% of those jobs being reserved for women. This programme will also place young graduates as interns in firms and companies with a view to sharpening their skills preparatory to engaging in entrepreneurship and those firms that choose to retain these graduates will be given incentives by the Federal Government. This is only one step in government's plan to provide the enabling environment for all willing Nigerians to get to work and compliments the Youth Enterprise With Innovation in Nigeria (YouWin) initiative which I launched on the 11th of October 2011.

I want to close this day by remembering a great fallen patriot, a man who paid the Supreme price for this nation and a man whose zeal for Nigeria's unity knew no bounds. Today, I remember General Murtala Ramat Mohammed who fell to the assassins bullets on this day 36 years ago. May his soul continue to rest in peace.

On the 18th of September, 2010 I made a sincere and solemn promise to "never, never let" Nigerians down. I repeated this good governance promise when I took oath of office on the 29th of May, 2011. Those words of promise have remained a driving force of all I do in my sojourn in public service. In the last few months we have taken steps to actualize these promises as we were the FIRST nation to airlift her citizens from the Arab Republic of Egypt in 2011 as a result of the uprising there. To communicate to all and sundry that this was not by happen stance, we moved in to protect our citizens in Libyan Arab Jamahiriya and Cote d'Ivoire when threats to our citizens safety became apparent. The administration also ensured that Nigeria was removed from the U.S. travel blacklist which we briefly entered as a result of the Abdulmutallab incident and ensured that Nigeria received Category One Status in the U.S.A. These actions are a deliberate projection of the new citizen centered focus of Nigeria's Foreign Policy and we will not relent. We are a nation of good people and collectively we will work for the good of humanity beginning from home.

Let me use this opportunity to thank you my friends on facebook that your encouragement and support has continued to strengthen us to remain focused on the urgent business of working for peaceful co-existence, promoting the welfare, well being and dignity of the Nigerian people. I want to urge all Nigerians wherever we may find ourselves to continue to remain hardworkiing, law abiding and united. These are tough economic times and as we work night and day to turn things around for the better, I will continue to remind myself that the mandate you gave to me to defend you is a sacred mandate that will not be taken for granted. May God Almighty grant me the enablement to " never, never let you down".

What will you say to this?

QuoteToday, in Sokoto, Sokoto State, I commissioned the first of several Federal Government Model Almajiri Schools for itinerant scholars commonly referred to as Almajiri. This is in fulfillment of the promises I made on this page in a note titled 'Fighting Insecurity With Education' on the 15th of November 2010. This promise was also repeated at various times during my presidential campaign. I gave my word that I would ensure that every child in Nigeria has access to quality education, and today, in every state of Nigeria where the almajirinci form of education is practiced this administration will ensure that a Model Almajiri School is built. These schools will promote the learning of Islamic religious knowledge and Western education. The schools will be equipped with modern facilities such as a Language Laboratory, Qur'an recitation hall, classrooms and dormitories as well as a clinic, vocational workshop, dining hall and mallam quarters. This is only a beginning. We will not stop there. This administration has given and will continue to give all levels of education (primary, secondary and tertiary) priority because as a teacher myself I know that in this knowledge-driven age, a nation does not become wealthy by what it has under the ground rather the wealth of nations are today measured by what is between the ears of her citizens.

As we approach the first anniversary of this administration and because we derived our mandate from the people by way of a free and fair election, I have instructed members of the Executive Council of the Federation to render an account of their stewardship to Nigerians. This rendering, by way of televised live ministerial briefings are ongoing and I encourage all Nigerians to watch these briefings and give me feedback on this page. Feedback is the synergy that is needed to make government work better for you and as I have demonstrated from the inception of this page, I take your feedback into account in formulating government policy as well as in the decision making process.

Again, coach Keshi and our skillful and patriotic players have shown the world the indomitable Nigerian spirit. It is this spirit that Nigeria's leading lights came together to celebrate on Monday the 4th of February 2013 as we began our centenary celebrations. The Super Eagles have done us proud, the Cup is within reach and Nigeria is indeed grateful and expectant of a special centenary gift from our players. GEJ

Dear friends on facebook,

The determination of this administration to create wealth in Nigeria and for Nigerians has led us to focus our investment drive towards attracting Foreign Direct Investments in manufacturing and the service sector to ensure that jobs are created. And this drive is not an exercise in futility as Nigeria is becoming the preferred destination for FDI. Just last week, General Electric announced a decision to invest $1 billion in setting up a manufacturing plant to support power generation and oil production. Their plant, to be situated in Calabar, will provide jobs for thousands with multiplier effect for tens of thousands more and will make Nigeria a hub for power equipment in the region. The end result of this investment is that Nigeria's power generating infrastructure will be expanded meaning more power for Nigerians which translates to even more jobs.

While we continue to encourage the Private Sector to help grow our economy and create jobs for our youths, we will do all within our powers to also keep our youths engaged. In this regard I am happy to report that the 600 bed Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State which this administration began working on in February 2011 has reached 95% completion and when commissioned later this year it will provide jobs for 3000 people. Similar projects are ongoing in other geo-political zones and I will keep you updated.

Today (13th February, 2013) marks the 37th anniversary of the death of General Murtala Ramat Mohammed, the great patriot who paid the ultimate price for Nigeria. I urge all Nigerians to remember the life and times of this hero of Nigeria who proved the truism in the maxim that people may die but ideas never die. Today, his ideas live after him-Abuja as the Federal Capital of a united strong and prospering Nigeria and Democracy thriving all over the nation. But perhaps most prophetic is his speech at the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in January of 1976 where he said 'Africa has come of age'. Almost 37 years to the day, all Nigerians celebrate our victorious Super Eagles who to paraphrase Murtala's words proved that Nigeria 'has come of age'. I thank God for giving us such a patriot and pray that the labours of our heroes past shall never be in vain. GEJ

I am overjoyed at the stunning victory of the Super Eagles which has seen Nigeria emerge as the champions of the African Cup of Nations, 2013. Well done Patriots, you have done Nigeria proud. 2013 is obviously the year of Nigeria. We have emerged as a beacon of hope on the African continent by proving to Africa and the world that a strong Nigerian team put together and trained by a Nigerian coach can stand the test of time and successfully rise to the challenge of a most formidable opponent. The Nigerian spirit stands strong and steady as we march to the destination of greatness. I doff my fedora hat to this great squad that has brought laughter and happiness to our homes. Nigerians are grateful. We thank God. We thank you. GEJ

This past weekend I hosted Nollywood, the Nigerian movie industry, to a reception to celebrate a glorious 20th anniversary of the industry. The event was an opportunity to celebrate creativity, excellence, hard work and togetherness. Twenty years ago we looked to other parts of the world for movie entertainment. Today, millions around the world are looking towards Nigeria. The focus on Nigeria is not just in entertainment but in wealth creation as well. I received news from KPMG, one of the world's leading financial advisory firms, to the effect that Nigeria is amongst the world's top 4 preferred investment destinations. This is an affirmation of Nigeria's reforms which has seen an increase in our Gross Domestic Product, Per Capita Income and a movement towards reduction in our poverty rates. My dear friends on facebook, I will not be satisfied until we can get all our youths to work, improve our infrastructure: roads, rail, power, aviation. Things are looking up, Nigeria is a haven for investors and this administration is also taking steps to protect the interests of domestic entrepreneurs. GEJ

Today, I want to wish a genuine Nigerian patriot, President Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, GCFR, a happy birthday. Since the time you were 'Beckoned to Serve' you have consistently demonstrated the humility of a servant leader. As a democrat per excellence, you always reached out to all the peoples of Nigeria in persuasion rather than dictation. On behalf of my family and the people of Nigeria, I felicitate with you and your family as you mark your 88th birthday and pray for God to give you a long life of further service to Nigeria. Happy Birthday sir. GEJ

In January last year, I had cause to brief our nation on my determination to sanitize the oil industry in order that it would be run in a most businesslike manner such that Nigeria receives value for her God given resources and investments. I had earlier taken strong action with regard to the power sector. The goal was to arrive at the destination of self-sufficiency where waste and inefficiency is eliminated and electricity is available to meet the needs of our citizens.

I have received briefings that previously closed petroleum depots have been reopened or are about to be reopened nationwide and as at today, our domestic refining capacity has peaked at over 10 million liters per day which is our highest level in decades. Nigeria is now is on the road to meeting her fuel consumption needs domestically. Simultaneously, I have also received encouraging reports on the progress made in bringing suspects found wanting during the fuel subsidy probe to book and in accordance with the rule of law.

Two weeks ago, I hosted the Presidential Power Reform Transactions Signing Ceremony. The five power generation companies that emerged successful in the bidding process of the privatization of the sector received their certificates and are set to run their companies in a way as to guarantee electricity for domestic and industrial use even as the world is celebrating the transparent bidding process that culminated in the signing.

I want to assure you my friends on facebook that we shall put the darkness of these past decades behind us in no distant time. We shall only keep a forward movement in the critical sectors of our economy and may Almighty God help us all.

EASTER MESSAGE TO THE NATION FROM PRESIDENT GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN, GCFR

Dear Compatriots,

I greet and felicitate with you all as we celebrate Easter which commemorates the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ after his redemptive self-sacrifice for the eternal salvation of mankind.

Irrespective of our religion or faith, all holidays provide us with a fresh opportunity to establish stronger bonds with our family, friends and all those around us for more enduring, harmonious and beneficial relationships.

As we celebrate this year's Easter therefore, I urge all Nigerians to rededicate themselves to living in peace and oneness with all members of their communities no matter their ethnicity, religious beliefs or places of origin.

By now, it ought to be an accepted fact amongst us that our immense potential for greatness in the comity of nations derives in the main from our collective strength as a country of close to 170 million people and the acclaimed richness of our diverse human resources and natural endowments.

It follows, therefore, that to successfully achieve our vision of becoming one of the most dominant nations on the global stage in the shortest possible time, we must stay together as a people and continue to effectively resist by all possible means, the evil machinations of global terrorists and their misguided domestic accomplices who seek to provoke turmoil, hatred and harmful divisions among us.

I assure all Nigerians that our security agencies, armed forces and I will continue to fully discharge our constitutional responsibilities for protecting the unity and territorial integrity of this country with all the powers and forces at our disposal.

We must have peace, security and stability to effectively implement our agenda for national transformation in all parts of the country and we shall continue to work ceaselessly to re-establish the prerequisite conditions for nationwide progress and development.

For your part, dear countrymen and women, I urge you to continue to exhibit restraint and understanding in the face of seeming provocations. Those who mindlessly and indiscriminately attack churches, schools, health workers, motor-parks, banks and ordinary road users must be seen as they truly are: the brainwashed pawns of international terrorism.

They do not represent any true religion or section of the country and we must never play into their hands by succumbing to their nefarious ploys to incite religious, ethnic hatred and division among us.

It is my hope and prayer that as we celebrate the glorious resurrection of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, his lessons of self-sacrifice, brotherly love, placing others before self, tolerance, obedience, respect for lawful authorities, dutifulness, diligence, honesty, justice and fairness to all will take firmer root in our beloved country and help us to overcome present challenges and build the more peaceful, secure, united, progressive and prosperous nation of our dreams.

I wish you all happy Easter celebrations.

Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR

Federal Republic of Nigeria

10th March, 2013

I would like to wish all mothers of Nigeria a happy Mothers Day! Without the tender loving care of mothers we could not have successful, thriving communities and without successful communities you can not have a great, success-destined and endowed Nation. We owe our present and our future to God Almighty and to the mothers of Nigeria now and centuries ahead. On behalf of every Nigerian I pass on our deepest gratitude to every mother in Nigeria.

Dear friends, two weeks ago my team and I gave a mid-term report of the Transformation Agenda of this administration. Though the event was televised live, I know that Nigerians would want to take ownership of the Transformation Agenda and so I have ensured that a soft copy of the report is now available on the National Planning Commission's site www.npc.gov.ng. Please read the report and let me know what you think we have done well and how we can do better. I thank you and may God bless Nigeria.

ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN, GCFR

ON THE DECLARATION OF A STATE OF EMERGENCY IN BORNO, YOBE AND ADAMAWA STATES IN ORDER TO RESTORE PUBLIC ORDER, PUBLIC SAFETY AND SECURITY IN THE AFFECTED STATES OF THE FEDERATION

MAY 14, 2013

Dear compatriots,

1. It has become necessary for me to address you on the recent spate of terrorist activities and protracted security challenges in some parts of the country, particularly in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Kano, Plateau and most recently Bayelsa, Taraba, Benue and Nasarawa states. These unfortunate events have led to needless loss of lives and property of many innocent Nigerians including members of our security forces.

2. The recent killing of security operatives by a cult group in Nasarawa state is particularly condemnable. I have directed that no effort or expense be spared in identifying and bringing to justice all those who had a hand in the killing of the operatives.

3. The activities of insurgents and terrorists have been reprehensible, causing fear among our citizens and a near-breakdown of law and order in parts of the country, especially the North. We have taken robust steps to unravel and address the root causes of these crises, but it would appear that there is a systematic effort by insurgents and terrorists to destabilize the Nigerian state and test our collective resolve.

4. Since I returned to the country after cutting short my visit to South Africa and aborting a planned state visit to Namibia, I have received detailed briefings from our security agencies. These briefings indicate that what we are facing is not just militancy or criminality, but a rebellion and insurgency by terrorist groups which pose a very serious threat to national unity and territorial integrity. Already, some northern parts of Borno state have been taken over by groups whose allegiance is to different flags and ideologies.

5. These terrorists and insurgents seem determined to establish control and authority over parts of our beloved nation and to progressively overwhelm the rest of the country. In many places, they have destroyed the Nigerian flag and other symbols of state authority and in their place, hoisted strange flags suggesting the exercise of alternative sovereignty.

6. They have attacked government buildings and facilities. They have murdered innocent citizens and state officials. They have set houses ablaze, and taken women and children as hostages. These actions amount to a declaration of war and a deliberate attempt to undermine the authority of the Nigerian state and threaten her territorial integrity. As a responsible government, we will not tolerate this.

7. Previously, we adopted a multi-track approach to the resolution of this problem through actions which included persuasion, dialogue and widespread consultation with the political, religious and community leaders in the affected states.

8. We exercised restraint to allow for all efforts by both State Governors and well-meaning Nigerians to stop the repeated cases of mindless violence.

9. Yet, the insurgents and terrorists seek to prevent government from fulfilling its constitutional obligations to the people as they pursue their fanatical agenda of mayhem, mass murder, division and separatism.

10. While the efforts at persuasion and dialogue will continue, let me reiterate that we have a sacred duty to ensure the security and well-being of all our people and protect the sovereign integrity of our country. Therefore, we shall, on no account, shy away from doing whatever becomes necessary to provide the fullest possible security for the citizens of this country in any part of the country they choose to reside.

11. We have a duty to stand firm against those who threaten the sovereign integrity of the Nigerian state. Our will is strong, because our faith lies in the indivisibility of Nigeria.

12. Following recent developments in the affected states, it has become necessary for Government to take extraordinary measures to restore normalcy. After wide consultations, and in exercise of the powers conferred on me by the provisions of Section 305, sub-section 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, I hereby declare a State of Emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.

13. Accordingly, the Chief of Defence Staff has been directed to immediately deploy more troops to these states for more effective internal security operations. The troops and other security agencies involved in these operations have orders to take all necessary action, within the ambit of their rules of engagement, to put an end to the impunity of insurgents and terrorists.

14. This will include the authority to arrest and detain suspects, the taking of possession and control of any building or structure used for terrorist purposes, the lock-down of any area of terrorist operation, the conduct of searches, and the apprehension of persons in illegal possession of weapons.

15. The details of this Proclamation will be transmitted to the National Assembly in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution. But in the meantime, let me make it clear that within the purview of this Proclamation, the Governors and other political office holders in the affected states will continue to discharge their constitutional responsibilities.

16. I urge the political leadership in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states to co-operate maximally with the Armed Forces and the Police to ensure that the exercise succeeds. We call on the citizenry to co-operate with our security agencies to ensure a return to normalcy within the shortest possible time.

17. I am again approaching our neighbouring countries, through diplomatic channels, as done in the recent past, for their co-operation in apprehending any terrorist elements that may escape across the border.

18. Nigerians are peace-loving people; these sad events perpetrated by those who do not wish our nation well have not changed the essential character of our people.

19. I want to reassure you all that those who are directly or indirectly encouraging any form of rebellion against the Nigerian state, and their collaborators; those insurgents and terrorists who take delight in killing our security operatives, whoever they may be, wherever they may go, we will hunt them down, we will fish them out, and we will bring them to justice. No matter what it takes, we will win this war against terror.

20.I am convinced that with your support and prayers, we shall overcome these challenges and together, we will restore every part of our country to the path of peace, growth and development.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

1st August, 2013 Update from President Goodluck Jonathan Facebook Wall:

Even in these challenging times we must encourage the good news narrative to thrive so as to drown out the unacceptable negatives in the polity. Just a few developments: The first is that MTN Nigeria limited has appointed a Nigerian, Mr. Michael Ikpoki, as its first Nigerian CEO. This appointment follows others in critical sectors and confirms to me that efforts by the Federal Government to build the capacity of the Nigerian knowledge worker and make Nigeria a regional and continental hub for excellence in business and service delivery through policy and reforms like the the Local Content Act are beginning to yield fruit. I commend MTN Nigeria limited for this appointment.

The second occurrence is the celebration by the city of Awka, in Anambra state of three weeks of uninterrupted public power supply and counting. I personally wish Nigeria had achieved this milestone decades ago, but nevertheless we are making steady progress. More cities will soon be able to have such celebrations because the Roadmap to Power Sector Reforms is having the desired effects with almost all of Nigeria's electricity Distribution companies (Discos) and Generating companies (Gencos) now in private hands as I promised on the 26th of August 2010 in Lagos when I launched the Power Roadmap. My friends on facebook, in a few years from now many will not remember the agony and anger caused by absence of electricity in our homes just as many do not now remember the long queues in front of NITEL awaiting to take or make a call.

And finally, I am most delighted to learn like the average Nigerian, that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has approved the registration of the All Progressive Congress (APC). In 2010, when I nominated outstanding men and women into INEC, I wanted citizens completely removed from me, with a consistent and verifiable history of independent activism to lead the electoral body so that it could be truly independent and free and be seen by the public to be truly free from government influence. I commend INEC for their efforts so far and urge that the commission continues to be guided by patriotic considerations in its decisions.

My dear friends on facebook, my commitment to building strong institutions so as to help sustain and strengthen our democracy remains unshakable. It is true that our press is acknowledged to be the freest in Africa and one of the freest in the world. It is true that Nigeria has been recognized as being the foremost recipient for Foreign Direct Investment, FDI, in Africa as well as poised to have Africa's largest Gross Domestic Product, GDP, in the next few years which are indications that our economy is growing. It is true that reforms in Agriculture, Petroleum, Aviation, Works, Finance, Transport, and other sectors have positive impact on our economy. Dear friends, I will not rest until all these reforms and good news have direct impact on the lives of our people at the grass roots level.

President Goodluck Jonathan extends Ramadan greeting to all Muslim Faithful!

As we mark the end of Ramadan, I want to seize this opportunity to felicitate with my Muslim brothers and sisters and the Islamic ummah for successfully accomplishing one of the acts that comprise the Five Pillars of Islam, fasting. From close encounters with the leading lights of the ummah during this season, I observed firsthand the piety and increased spirituality that the Ramadan fast inspired in believers and I am most delighted that the lessons and discipline attained from the exercise would be of immense benefit to our nation. I thank you all for your prayers and intercession for Nigeria and I urge all Nigerians to draw lessons from the glorious Ramadan that will stay with us all year long until, God willing, we meet again for Ramadan in 2014.

Ramadan Kareem.

In 2011, I made a promise to the people of Nigeria that every zone of our great nation would have an international airport. A little over two years to the day I made that promise we are witnessing the inaugural international flight from the Akanu Ibiam International airport, Enugu.

As I said during my inaugural address, "the time for lamentation is over; this is the era of transformation". Our rail infrastructure is being brought back on track and expanded; our road networks are receiving attention even as we insist on getting them wider and better. As some of you may have noticed, the aviation sector is being overhauled so as to make flying accessible to the average Nigerian.

Let me use this occasion to encourage all patriots to remain resolute in our collective pursuit of development and happiness. We must make progress together and no Citizen, no Community in our Country will be left behind. Our determination to ensure developmental justice in ALL the zones shall remain unshakable.

Address by His Excellency, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR On the Occasion of Nigeria's 53rd Independence Anniversary.

Tuesday 1st October, 2013

FELLOW NIGERIANS,

1. Today marks 53 years of our Independence as a nation. First and foremost, I would like to say congratulations to us all. Through thick and thin, we have built this country together. Through triumphs and trials, we have developed a Nigerian identity in our own way.

2. In truth, Nigeria is still a work in progress and we are challenged everyday to keep building in spite of the various obstacles that we face. Our strength has been in our diversity. If we look back over the years, we can say confidently that there is every reason to celebrate.

3. Today's Independence anniversary is unique because it is the last before we mark our centenary. On January 1, 2014, Nigeria will be 100 years old as a country, following the amalgamation of the Protectorates of Southern and Northern Nigeria in 1914.

We have taken further steps towards ensuring and guaranteeing electricity availability for human and industrial use in our beloved country. I congratulate our new owners who have taken over the engines and cables that are expected to drive not just the electricity industry but also the socio-economic well-being of the nation. To the Nigerian people, who have demonstrated such great patience and confidence, putting up often with darkness for decades, I say better days are coming.

23rd September 2013 Update from President Goodluck Jonathan Facebook Wall:

Today, I had the honour of ringing the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange after I had heralded to global captains of industry Nigeria's efforts in recent times that has made our nation a prime destination for foreign investment and one that ensures some of the highest Return on Investments (RoI) in the world. This is just the beginning of greater things to come for our country and our continent. The foundation of planning which we laid at the inception of our administration is being strengthened for greater service delivery for our people. My attention has just been drawn to some modest but positive steps in the education sector. In 2010, the pass rates for our National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examinations was 15.84%. To address the abysmal failure and general decay in education we convened an emergency education summit in 2010 to deliberate on why we had fallen so far back and how best can we move up? We took the report from that conference and began implementing some of the recommendations. The education sector had the highest sectoral allocation in the budget the following year and has remained among the topmost in allocation since then. On Friday the 20th of September 2013, the results of our efforts began to manifest. This year, 69.57% of Nigerian students passed the 2013 Senior School Certificate Examinations. We cannot relent. While we continue to negotiate with ASUU so that never again will strikes be an impediment to the realization of our children's educational aspiration, it is important that we keep our eyes on the ball: a holistic turn around in our education. As we make progress in every sector of our economy: Transportation, Aviation, Agriculture, Power, Finance, Energy Security and all others it is not celebration time until all our citizens can feel the progress in our communities and our constituencies. We must pay greater attention to education. As I said on this page on April 10, 2012 when I commissioned the first of 400 Almajirinci Model Schools in Gagi, Sokoto state "a nation does not become wealthy by what it has under the ground rather the wealth of nations are today measured by what is between the ears of her citizens". To the world I say, we have the most industrious humans on earth and we are ready for business. To fellow Nigerians, our collective work for change is not done. Lets us not be discouraged by the attempt to drag us into partisan politics when the urgent issue of the moment is governance.

Not too long ago, we announced a new National Automobile Policy. I am happy to note that the policy is now attracting great interest in our country with the consequential benefit for job creation and savings for our nation. The announcement by the Nissan Corporation that it will be investing in our country by way of manufacturing its brand of cars in Nigeria is very heart warming. With the confirmation that Nigeria ranks fourth in the world as the fastest Return on Investment (RoI), I hereby call on other world class automobile manufacturers and other businesses to also begin their journey to establish factories in Nigeria as we have a well trained and hardworking work force, at home and abroad, ready to add value to the growth of businesses and our country.

Today is a great day for Nigeria and womanhood as our mother, Chief Mrs. Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, the Yeye Odua and 'jewel of inestimable value' celebrates her 98th birthday. I want to warmly on behalf of myself, my family and all Nigerians wish our mother a most glorious birthday anniversary. Mama, you have inspired millions of people around the world. Your sterling qualities of honesty and dedication have been qualities that womanhood will be proud of. Again, the Super Eagles have demonstrated why they are the Champions of Africa. The match today in Calabar was a master piece of great footballing. This is the sort of team work and synergy that the world has come to expect from not just our football teams, but from the general Nigerian society. With the type of play we witnessed today, the World Cup is within reach. I commend Stephen Keshi for putting together a formidable team and urge all our players not to rest on their oars as we march forward to Brazil next year. All Nigerians can count on this administration to provide every necessary support towards achieving set objectives for the good and greatness of our country. Congratulations to all Nigerians and may God bless Nigeria.

8th November 2013 Update from President Goodluck Jonathan Facebook Wall:

Today, I commend Nigeria's Golden Eaglets for their well deserved victory at the FIFA Under-17 World Soccer tournament in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, UAE. The players played with great skill and projected the Nigerian can do spirit and the end result is that Nigeria is now a four time champion. This could not have come at a better time seeing as Nigeria is on the cusp of celebrating our centenary as a nation. In February this year, the Super Eagles won the African Cup of Nations and now our youths are today the world's champions. This is no fluke. It is no coincidence. It is a reaffirmation of what I have always known; that excellence is a Nigerian habit. I believe Nigerians are poised to extend this habit to every facet of our national life. May God bless us all and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

15th October 2013 Update from President Goodluck Jonathan Facebook Wall:

On this day when our Muslim brothers and sisters celebrate Eid-el-Kabir, I see a point of congruence between Islam and Christianity in that this day of celebration is held to honour the willingness of the Patriarch, Ibrahim, to make sacrifices to God. Ibrahim or Abraham is a central figure to both faiths and is proof that there are a lot more that unite us as Muslims and Christians. As we celebrate the sacrifice of this patriarch, I call on all Nigerians to join the Islamic Ummah in praying and working for a greater Nigeria. This is what we should take from this holy day and beyond. Happy Eid-el-Kabir to our Muslim brothers and sisters and also to all Nigerians.

6th December 2013 Update from President Goodluck Jonathan Facebook Wall:

My dear friends on facebook, the news of the passing of the great Nelson Mandela to ancestorhood has left Africa and the rest of humanity with a deep feeling of loss.

Never in recent living memory has a leader mobilized the consciousness of human existence to the cause of freedom and the advancement of world civilization as did Mandela.

By his exemplary life of humility and high inclusivity, the former president enshrined a beacon of hope for the hopeless and gave power to the powerless in the world as we know it today.
He was a man who planted trees whose shade he knew he would never physically enjoy but was nonetheless satisfied that the trees would provide some shade for the living.

As humanity looks into the future, the Mandela story will remain a most outstanding example of compassion, forgiveness and progress. Because of the work of Mandela and his compatriots, humanity now looks forward to a better world in the centuries ahead. Adieu, our leader Mandela!

25th December 2013 Update from President Goodluck Jonathan Facebook Wall:

As the world marks the birth of Jesus Christ, let me, on behalf of myself, my family and the Federal Government, extend the good tidings of peace, progress and joy to every home throughout our beloved country Nigeria.

Christmas is a time of joyous family gatherings and as President, I see every Nigerian as a member of my family and I urge us all to retain the unique sense of brotherly love that this season evokes beyond the Yuletide period.

While we will surely mark this holiday in our different ways and according to our established traditions, it is my desire that we all celebrate Christmas with some minimum comforts and my team and I have long prepared for this by working to improve our infrastructure especially those that most serve us during this season.

Knowing that this period is the peak period for cross country travels amongst our people, this administration has fast tracked the repair and reconstruction of artery roads nationwide. We have also ensured that the nightmare our citizens suffered at fuel stations during periods like this is put behind us. For the second year in a row, train services have continued to run from the Lagos Terminus all the way to The hinterlands of the North. This year, we also introduced cargo and haulage train services from the Lagos Port to up country locations.

With the Enugu airport now handling international flights, more of our people can fly directly to their localities resulting in reduced pressure on our roads.

Our policies to spur local production of staples such as rice and wheat are bearing fruits as evidenced by the 2013 Global Hunger Index.

Although I will not depend on statistics until every Nigerian has enough to eat at all times and in every season, the report is salutary and only galvanizes us to further action.

I have also personally monitored government's fiscal effort which we ensured were tightened for the purpose of avoiding or severely reducing the seasonal inflationary trends on consumer goods around this time of the year with the attendant result that inflation is at single digit rate.

These steps have been undertaken because of my belief that every good and great thing is possible in our country if we desire to achieve it.

So, as we all celebrate with friends and family, I say from me to you, Merry Christmas and may the joys of the season extend from our individual homes to those of our neighbors and neighboring communities irrespective of religion and region.

Today, as I perform the Ground Breaking Ceremony of the Second Niger Bridge, I am fulfilling a promise I made to all Nigerians and more specifically to the people of the Southeast that the Federal Government will ensure that another bridge linking the Southeast to other geo-political regions is built. The impact of this bridge is beyond economics and commerce. This bridge, when completed, will strengthen the Handshake Across the Niger and promote integration amongst the people of Nigeria. Building bridges, and not just physical ones, is something every Nigerian should be engaged in and this administration has taken extra ordinary measures, including the convocation of a National Conference amongst our people, to ensure that just as the physical bridges are being constructed, Nigerians from all geo-political zones can construct new bridges of friendship even as we strengthen old ones. 17th March 2014 Update from President Goodluck Jonathan Facebook Wall:

Three weeks ago, we celebrated our centenary as a nation and took stock of what we have achieved in the last hundred years. As we journey into this new century of nationhood, it is necessary that we come together to deliberate on how we can build on the gains of the last century and foster greater understanding amongst the various people of Nigeria so that we can achieve more in the centuries ahead.

This is Nigeria's time. This is our century. All Nigerians must stand behind our flag and place Nigeria first in all we do.

I want to urge all delegates to focus on our togetherness even as we put in our very best to build a cohesive union in the interest of the communities and institutions that we have come to the conference to represent.

I pray for fruitful deliberations and may God bless the conference and Nigeria.

7th April 2014 Update from President Goodluck Jonathan Facebook Wall:

Yesterday, our Gross Domestic Product was rebased to give an accurate picture of where we are as a nation. I am glad to report to you that Nigeria is officially the largest economy in Africa with a Gross Domestic Product of $510 billion which also places us as the 26th largest economy in the world.

This feat is a collective achievement of all Nigerians particularly when you take into account the fact that our Per Capita Income had increased by over 60% from $1091 in 2009 to $1700 in 2013, prior to the rebasing.

While this calls for celebration, I personally cannot celebrate until all Nigerians can feel the positive impact of our growth. There are still too many of our citizens living in poverty.

Three years ago, I was asked to define Transformation and I said "Transformation in my view simply means taking what you have and making the best of it and in so doing produce results that can bring about a paradigm shift".

That positive paradigm shift, as occurred yesterday, is still a work in progress.

Regardless of our present challenges, our place as a nation at the table of greatness is assured.

29th May 2014 Update from President Goodluck Jonathan Facebook Wall:

Democracy Day Speech by President Goodluck Jonathan

Fellow Nigerians,

1. I greet and felicitate with you all, today, as we mark 15 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in our beloved country.

2. Our dear nation, Nigeria, has certainly come a long way and made notable progress since our first Democracy Day on May 29, 1999 when the military finally relinquished power and handed over to a democratically-elected government, marking the true beginning of a government of the people, by the people, for the people."

3. Although I have ordered a low-key commemoration of this year's Democracy Day in deference to the current mood of the nation, there can be no doubt that the past 15 years, the longest period of sustained democratic governance in our country, have been a blessing to us, as a people.

4. As we commemorate 15 years of our Fourth Republic today therefore, I believe that it is fitting that we pay tribute once again to all those who played a part in restoring our nation to the true path of democratic governance, built on the foundations of rule of law and freedom of expression.

5. As a result of our collective efforts since 1999, democratic governance is now entrenched in our nation and institutions. I wholeheartedly believe that our people are the better for it. The scope of fundamental rights and liberties enjoyed by our people over the past 15 years has been expanded beyond measure.

6. On my watch, we have witnessed high national economic growth rates, steady improvements and expansion of national infrastructure including airports and roads, the restoration of rail transportation, the efficient implementation of a roadmap for improved power supply, a revolutionary approach to agricultural production, as well as advances in education, sports, youth development, healthcare delivery, housing, water supply and other social services.

7. In the oil and gas sector, our promotion of a sustainable local content policy, continues to guarantee equity and better opportunities for Nigerian entrepreneurs and skilled personnel.

8. Significant increase in mobile telephone and national broadband penetration, making Information and Communications Technology (ICT) one of the fastest growing sectors of the Nigerian economy. We have also developed strong financial markets and regulatory institutions. Our banks now have regional and global footprints.

9. Nigeria has also gained recognition as the largest economy in Africa, the most preferred investment destination in the continent and in terms of returns on investment, the fourth in the world. We are pleased that the world has noticed, as global leaders converged in Abuja early this month for the World Economic Forum in Africa.

10. The event not only witnessed a record attendance, it brought the prospect of an additional flow of investment into the Nigerian economy estimated at over $68 billion over the next few years.

11. In foreign relations, our country has equally done well within this period, by establishing and strengthening strong partnerships with all ECOWAS countries and the rest of the world. This has helped to deepen Nigeria's leadership role in multilateral institutions including the United Nations.

12. Furthermore, under this administration, we have made consistent progress in improving the standard of elections in our country to ensure that they are ever more credible and truly representative of the people's free choice. The National Conference we initiated to deliberate and make recommendations on the best ways of resolving our current political and socio-economic challenges is on-going. It is our expectation that its outcomes will help to further consolidate the gains we have made from democracy in the past 15 years, and place our dear nation even more firmly on the path to greatness.

Dear Compatriots,
13. It is a sad fact that as I address you today, all the gains of the past 15 years of democratic governance in our country are threatened by the presence of international terrorism on our shores. Our dear country, Nigeria is facing a new challenge. A war has been unleashed on us. Extremist foreign elements, collaborating with some of our misguided citizens, are focused on an attempt to bring down our country and the democracy and freedom we cherish and celebrate today.

14. The despicable abduction of school girls from Chibok in Borno State has brought to the awareness of the entire world, the heartless brutality of these terrorists who want to instigate a descent into anarchy and balkanize our nation.

15. In recent years, terrorist attacks have claimed the lives of several of our compatriots, many have been injured or maimed, whole villages and communities have been destroyed and the economy of some of our states is in jeopardy.

16. There can be no doubt that what we are witnessing in Nigeria today is a manifestation of the same warped and ferocious world view that brought down the Twin Towers in New York, killed innocent persons in Boston and led to the murder of defenceless people in the Southern Russian city of Volgograd. Terrorist activities have brought war and pains to Mali, Somalia, Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. These agents of evil continue to brainwash and incite ignorant young men and women to attack the innocent. We cannot allow this to continue.

17. I welcome the statements of solidarity from patriotic citizens and the global community in support of our efforts to stamp out terrorism. I applaud the understanding that in a democracy, such as we are building, people can have differences while sharing worthy values and standing together in opposition to the scourge of terrorism. Nigeria is the only country we have and we must all work to preserve it for present and future generations.

18. Despite the challenges we face, we must commend our security forces. We must not forget their gallantry and successes in liberating nations and in peacekeeping, from Liberia to Sierra Leone, Congo, Sudan, Mali, Guinea-Bissau and many places in Africa and beyond. Our forces have paid the supreme price in several places at several times.

19. Today, they face a different challenge, an unconventional war by terrorists. They are adjusting and are being equipped to tackle the new menace of terrorism. We must show confidence in their ability. I have no doubt that, with the support of Nigerians, our neighbours and the international community, we will reinforce our defence, free our girls and rid Nigeria of terrorists.

20. It is now 45 days since the horrifying abduction of the college girls of Chibok. I share the deep pain and anxiety of their parents and guardians and I assure them once again that government will continue to do everything possible to bring our daughters home.

21. I am determined to protect our democracy, our national unity and our political stability, by waging a total war against terrorism. The unity and stability of our country, and the protection of lives and property are non-negotiable. I have instructed our security forces to launch a full-scale operation to put an end to the impunity of terrorists on our soil.

22. I have also authorized the security forces to use any means necessary under the law to ensure that this is done. I assure you that Nigeria will be safe again, and that these thugs will be driven away – it will not happen overnight, but we will spare no effort to achieve this goal.

23. For our citizens who have joined hands with Al Qaeda and international terrorists in the misguided belief that violence can possibly solve their problems, our doors remain open to them for dialogue and reconciliation, if they renounce terrorism and embrace peace.

24. My government, while pursuing security measures, will explore all options, including readiness to accept unconditional renunciation of violence by insurgents, and to ensure their de-radicalization, rehabilitation and re-integration into the broader society.

Dear Compatriots,
25. We must remain united to win the war against terrorism. Christians, Moslems, farmers, fishermen, herdsmen, teachers, lawyers, clergy or clerics, the rich, the poor and Nigerians from all sections of the country must work together with our security agencies and armed forces to overcome the terrorists who now threaten all that we hold dear.

26. The war against terror may be difficult, but the days of peace will come again. Terror is evil; nowhere in history has evil endured forever. The menace of Boko Haram will surely come to an end. I believe that because of your prayers, your courage, hardwork, faith and sacrifice, we will ultimately prevail over the terrorists and all other evil forces.

27. We are a strong, resilient and courageous people. We will continue to partner with the civilized world, to confront international terrorism and every other challenge that comes our way with patriotic zeal and determination.

Fellow Nigerians,

28. Yes, we have challenges but we will surely overcome. Nigeria is our country. Nigeria is blessed. We will all collectively protect, defend and develop this country for ourselves, and our children.

29. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

30. Thank you and God bless Nigeria.

20th April 2014 Update from President Goodluck Jonathan Facebook Wall:

Easter symbolizes resurrection, triumph and love.

Our economy was recently recognized as the largest in Africa, meaning that we have resurrected from the effects of the global recession and domestic challenges as a result of the hard work of all Nigerians.

As we celebrate Easter we must be mindful of the Golden Rule taught by Jesus Christ: Love Your Neighbour as Yourself.

This divine exhortation demands that we be conscious of events around our neighbourhood and not leave security to the government and security services alone but report suspicious activities to law enforcement agents.

I have no doubt that we shall triumph over our present challenges and make our country one of the greatest nations in earth.

I wish all Nigerians a happy Easter and May the Almighty God bless you and Nigeria. GEJ

27th July 2014 Update from President Goodluck Jonathan Facebook Wall:

As we mark the end of Rammadan with the Eid-el-Fitri celebrations, I want to congratulate the Muslim Ummah for a successful fast as well as thank Nigerians for their prayers for Nigeria.

It is my hope that we retain the character improvements that the Ramadan fast fostered in us beyond this season. One of those character traits which the Quran emphasizes is tolerance. Nigeria needs tolerance amongst her people irrespective of region or religion and I commend the Muslim Ummah for demonstrating this virtue even as I recommend it to all of us.

I urge all patriotic Nigerians to remain strong and resolute in defence of freedom, unity, law and order, peace, security and progress of the nation.

I wish all Nigerians the best as we celebrate during this holiday. May God bless Nigeria. GEJ

29th June 2014 Update from President Goodluck Jonathan Facebook Wall:

As we mark the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, I urge the Muslim Ummah to use this time of fasting and piety to pray for peace and love to reign amongst all the people of Nigeria. The Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) taught that this period should be devoted to acts of kindness and for uplifting society through noble acts that spring from deep introspection on the teachings of the holy Quran. We must now and forever be our brother's and sister's keepers. By being our brother's and sister's keepers we can build a just society as envisaged by Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Once again, I salute the Muslim Ummah as we commence Ramadan and I also congratulate all Muslims on the sighting of the moon that marks the beginning of this most holy month. GEJ.

21st October 2014 Update from President Goodluck Jonathan Facebook Wall:

Yesterday, Nigeria was declared Ebola free by the World Health Organization, (WHO). The declaration is an attestation to the Nigerian Can Do Spirit. It is also a clear demonstration of the many possibilities of our Nation. With us as a people, united under God, there is nothing we cannot achieve when we stand together behind an objective. Unity is the secret weapon Nigeria used against the Ebola Virus Disease and nothing shall be impossible for a united Nigeria. I congratulate and thank all Nigerians on this great feat. I want to also specially thank the governments and peoples of Lagos, Rivers and Enugu states, the first responders who treated the index cases. To all the thirty six state governors who united with the Federal Government to rid Nigeria of this scourge I also say a big thank you. Although we have been declared free of Ebola we must however, remain vigilant as the Ebola virus is still on rampage in neighboring Sister Countries. We cannot afford to let down our guard when there is still Ebola pain in our subregion. In this regard we will spare no resource in supporting our neighbors in the battle to contain this deadly scourge. May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

I congratulate the Muslim Ummah as we celebrate Eid-el-Kabir today and join Muslims all over Nigeria in appreciating the virtues of the patriarch Ibrahim. It is worthy of note that prophet Ibrahim is a figure highly respected in Islam and Christianity. This fact underscores the truism that we have a common ligament that engenders our union. As we mark the patriarch's willingness to make sacrifices, I do call on all Nigerians to be willing to make sacrifices for the good of our country, Nigeria. May Allah (SWT) bless us all and Nigeria.

1. Today marks the 54th anniversary of our country's independence as a sovereign nation. This is also the tenth month of our journey into a new century, having marked the centenary of our nation in January this year.

2. The first one hundred years were marked by triumphs and tribulations, benefits and burdens, opportunities and challenges. We made some far reaching advances in building a strong, united and prosperous nation. We also overcame the forces of disunity that culminated in a debilitating civil war. We have also renewed our faith in one another, and in our country. We have proven that we are truly a resilient nation.

3. In my address to the nation last year, I did emphasize that we were in a sober moment in our country. We are still in that mood in spite of the many accomplishments of our administration. Our sombreness has to do with the crises of nationhood occasioned by the activities of terrorist elements who have done the unimaginable to challenge our unity as a people.

4. On an occasion like this, it is important that we remember all the precious souls that have been lost in the unprecedented war of terror unleashed on some parts of our country by these individuals who want to compel us to live our lives their way. They will not succeed!

5. In their mission, they have maimed and raped. They have killed men, women and children, rendering many children orphans and several women widows.

6. They have made violence their ideology and are bent on destroying our country. Dear countrymen and women, we will not allow them.

7. Night after night, day after day, our security forces continue to engage the terrorists in battle. My gratitude goes out to our armed forces whose will has been greatly challenged by this insurgency more than any other time, since the civil war.

8. Yet, they have remained undaunted and unwearied in the face of constant challenge and mortal danger. Driven by patriotic zeal, they are turning the tide by their prowess and determination. As Commander-in-Chief, I will continue to do all it takes to enable them to keep on inflicting devastating blows at the heart of terror. Fellow Nigerians, it is our collective duty as patriots to avail our men and women in uniform of all the support they need to fight and win this war.

9. This Administration is committed to making Nigeria safe for all Nigerians, irrespective of our places of birth, how we worship God and our political persuasion. To all those waging war against our country, I ask that you lay down your arms and embrace peace.

10. To those who have genuine grievances, I affirm that Nigeria will listen to you, if you bring your grievances to the table of dialogue. To the good people of Nigeria, let me restate that our task of building a better and greater country must not waver.

11. While we continue to deploy our resources in the fight against the terrorists, we do recognize the great toll the conflict is taking on our people.

12. This is why, to assist the afflicted, we have launched the Victims Support Fund, an independent multi-sectoral charity, which will aggressively solicit resources to augment Government's statutory intervention, in bringing succour to the injured, the displaced and the bereaved.

13. In partnership with Nigerian business leaders and international partners, we have also introduced the Safe Schools Initiative which is aimed at promoting safe environments for education nationwide, starting with the North East region.

14. The Presidential Initiative for the North East, a comprehensive programme to fast-track the economic restoration of this region, which has been the epicentre of terrorist activity, has been set up.

15. Our overall objective is to do all we possibly can, to sustain in the North-East, the momentum of economic advancement, which is on-going in other parts of the country, despite the machinations of the terrorists and their sponsors.

16. It should now be clear to anyone who was ever in doubt that these terrorists do not mean well for anyone, of whatever religion or dispensation. Their persistent choice of the weakest and most vulnerable in society, for gruesome attack, provides an insight into their abnormal mind-set.

17. I urge every Nigerian to put aside political, sectional or other parochial considerations, and support whole-heartedly the efforts of the government and the military, in checking this evil.

18. We are grateful to the international community, and especially our neighbours who are working closely with us in confronting this challenge, for their increased partnership and solidarity. Our steady progress in weakening the insurgency has certainly justified our cooperation.

19. Fellow Nigerians, in my independence anniversary address last year, I informed you that we had taken cognizance of the suggestion over the years by well-meaning Nigerians on the need to focus attention on rebuilding and strengthening the ligaments of our union. It was in that regard that we announced the convening of a National Dialogue on the future of our beloved country.

20. We have successfully delivered on that promise as we established the 2014 National Conference headed by Justice Legbo Kutigi. After months of deliberations, which did not come without its challenges, the conference concluded its assignment and has handed its Report to me.

21. I have made a firm commitment that we would act on the recommendations of the conference. This, I have started by setting up the Ministerial Committee headed by the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation to work out the modalities for implementing the Report. Every promise I make, God willing, I will see to its fulfilment. I assure you, we shall implement the report.

22. One major lesson which the 2014 National Conference has taught us as a country is that, a multi-ethnic country like ours, must learn to embrace painstaking dialogue until consensus is established.

23. To me, the National Conference is the greatest centenary gift to our country that we must cherish and sustain.

24. Fellow Nigerians, our 54 year-journey as a nation has not been easy. There have been tough periods, but the Nigerian spirit and the unflagging resilience of our people have seen us through. We will continue to march forward to greater heights.

25. We have been able to sustain a big, strong and influential country with a robust economy. We are currently in our sixteenth year of uninterrupted democratic rule, daily improving on the consolidation of our democratic process.

26. Our Administration has made a commitment to ensure that we build and sustain a democratic infrastructure anchored on free and fair elections. International and local observers have attested to the positive evolution of electoral credibility and we cannot afford to relent.

27. We will continue to ensure that the will of the electorate prevails so that political leaders would be reminded at all times that there is a day of reckoning when they have to go back to the people at the polls. Election days must not be days of violence and death. We must remain vigilant to ensure that our electoral process is characterised by peace, security and transparency.

28. I enjoin the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), all security agencies, politicians and the electorate to work conscientiously and peacefully, together, to consolidate on the gains of the recent elections. Free and fair elections have come to stay; nothing else will be acceptable to our people.

29. My dear countrymen and women, occasions such as this present an opportunity to thank God for our country and to report to you, on our journey so far.

30. Our power sector reform is on course with the ultimate objective of generating enough electricity to power our homes, industries and businesses. We are making giant strides in the Agricultural Sector which we are re-positioning to diversify our economy. We will continue to upgrade our infrastructure to make life easier for all and create an enabling environment for enterprise to flourish.

31. Over the last four years, the implementation of the Nigerian Content Act in the Oil and Gas Sector has ensured major increase in the participation of indigenous Oil and Gas companies in the industry. Several critical infrastructure projects have been commissioned and commenced. The level of indigenous asset ownership has greatly increased and utilisation of Nigerian-owned and built assets such as marine vessels and rigs is being progressively enforced.

32. There has been maximised local value addition by encouraging the manufacture of equipment components and parts within the country. There has also been massive growth in indigenous participation in the provision of goods and services to the upstream sector from 10% to 60% within the last four years.

33. Today, following the rebasing of our economy, every international monitoring and ratings agency now acknowledges Nigeria as the largest economy in Africa, with a Gross Domestic Product of five hundred and ten billion dollars ($510 billion) which also places us as the 26th largest economy in the world. This is progress.

34. Earlier in the year, we launched the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) and the National Enterprise Development Programme (NEDEP) with the stated objective of fast tracking inclusive growth, job creation, enterprise development and industrialisation.

35. The success of these policies is already evident in the increased value addition in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors.

36. In line with our objective of encouraging the production of made-in-Nigeria vehicles and making Nigeria a regional hub for the automobile industry, a number of foreign auto manufacturers have established plants in Nigeria, complementing the laudable efforts of our local vehicle manufacturers who have also demonstrated great innovation and competitiveness.

37. We have also launched a special support programme for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises with an initial intervention fund of two hundred and twenty billion naira (N220 b). This is in addition to the Presidential Job Creation Board which I inaugurated recently with the charge to create three million jobs annually.

38. In demonstration of our Administration's commitment to addressing Nigeria's housing deficit, we have commenced the new mortgage re-finance programme with the establishment of the Nigerian Mortgage Re-finance Company. It is expected that, in addition to creating additional housing units across the country, this initiative also represents a huge job creation opportunity.

39. We have recorded notable success in the social sector. Nigeria has been globally acknowledged for reducing extreme hunger by more than half, with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) formally presenting the country with an award for achieving the Millennium Development Goal on Hunger three years ahead of the 2015 target date set for the Millennium Development Goals.

40. This progress is as a result of the deliberate policy of government to increase capacity in our agricultural sector of which the first step was to address and eliminate the graft in our fertilizer procurement system and ensure that the product gets directly to the farmer. We are expanding our irrigation infrastructure to ensure that our farmers have sufficient water supply for dry season farming.

41. A benefit of these combined actions is that our national food import bill has declined from 1.1 trillion naira (6.9 billion dollars) in 2009 to 684.7 billion naira (4.35 billion dollars) by December 2013, and continues to decline.

42. Modern hybrid schools are being provided for less privileged children across the country, resulting in significant increase in the national school enrolment figure.

43. In order to further enhance access to education at the tertiary level, fourteen new Federal Universities have been established; and, to encourage persons of exceptional abilities, our Administration has also introduced a Presidential Scholarship Scheme based strictly on excellence and merit.

44. On infrastructure, we are building roads, bridges, and new rail lines to make it easier to traverse Nigeria and increase the integration of our people and our ability to do business with each other. In this regard, we have commenced the process of building the Second Niger Bridge. The Loko-Oweto Bridge over River Benue in Nasarawa and Benue States, will significantly reduce travel time by road between Northern and Southern Nigeria. The on-going dredging of the River Niger up to Baro in Niger State is opening up large parts of the Nigerian hinterland to maritime activity.

45. The Zungeru and Mambilla Hydro-electric power projects are on course, and the Kashimbilla dam which we started a few years ago, is nearing completion. The successful privatisation of our power sector will in the long run enhance industrial growth. Policies such as this and others have raised Nigeria to the enviable status of being the number one recipient of Foreign Direct Investment in Africa in the past year.

46. The result of this infrastructure drive is that two and a half million jobs have been created over the past two years. This is a record, which we are committed to improve upon to continue to provide jobs for our youth.

47. An unprecedented number of Airports across the country, are not only being reconstructed at the same time, but being re-equipped and reassessed with emphasis on maintaining global standards.

48. Fellow Nigerians, the goals we set to achieve for our country involve expanding the frontiers of economic freedom. Let us therefore unite with one heart and one mind. All our people must have access to the good things of life. All our people must be empowered to pursue the gift of life with happiness. This is our country; we must build it for our common posterity.

49. As we move into an election year, desperate moves to overheat the polity are becoming a regular occurrence. Our political leaders in particular must know that the contest for power should not translate to the destruction of the polity.

50. The contest for the leadership of our country must yield good governance, and not ungovernable spaces. The love of country should rank higher than our individual ambitions.

51. We must remain committed to a united and indivisible Nigeria within democratic parameters. The protection of individual rights, liberty, equality before the law, freedom of thought, and a progressive pursuit of a sound economy must be our goal.

52. I cannot end this address without commenting on the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) which was sadly brought into our country recently. My directives to the Federal Ministry of Health saw the ministry leading the charge in curtailing the spread of this deadly scourge and managing its impact. This is how it should be: swift, effective and comprehensive action in defence of citizens.

53. It must be pointed out that the Ebola battle is still raging elsewhere in our sub-region. I therefore enjoin all our citizens to continue to adhere strictly to all the guidelines that have been given by our health officials to keep Ebola out of our country.

54. I appreciate and welcome the spirit of collaboration, unity and partnership with which we confronted the threat of the Ebola Virus Disease. I thank all Nigerians for working together to prevent what could have become a major epidemic. I particularly thank the medical personnel, some of whom made the ultimate sacrifice.

55. This is the spirit which we must demonstrate at all times as we face up to our challenges as a nation: one people, united by a common resolve, in the pursuit of one common national interest.

56. As we look forward to another year in our national life, I am more than confident that our tomorrow will be better than our yesterday and today. Nigeria has got the human and material resources to excel and we shall lead the way in that journey to our manifest destiny.

57. Fellow countrymen, brothers and sisters, in all our plans, and in all our words and our actions, we must stand together in love and unity, as one people under God.

58. We are one people from the womb of one Nigeria. We are brothers and sisters. We are one family. We are Nigerians.

59. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
