Plans for regional integration in the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN dominated Southwest are presently challenged by the oddity of a Labour Party controlled Ondo State. ACN's schemes for political hegemony were last weekend publicly rebuffed by Governor Segun Mimiko of Ondo State. The poser on the capacity of Iroko as Mimiko is popularly known to resist the Jagaban forces of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu would soon be an issue.
THE quest for political hegemony by the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, the dominant political party in the Southwest took another twist last Sunday with the declaration by Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko that one single political party cannot dominate the region.
Mimiko's Ondo State significantly, is the exception to the political colouration of the region having won his election on the platform of the Labour Party. All the other five states in the region are presently controlled by the ACN.
Remarkably, Dr. Mimiko is this week celebrating the third anniversary of his ascension to power in February 2009. His inauguration followed a trenchant political battle that pitched him and his supporters against his former boss, Dr. Segun Agagu who was seeking re-election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP the party that until recently dominated the political landscape of the southwest.
Mimiko's victory, if not on the field then in the judicial terrain, was by many unconfirmed accounts helped by the ACN and its national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the emerging political colossus in the region.
Following his inauguration which was attended by Tinubu and prominent chieftains of the ACN, expectations in some quarters of political collaboration if not an outright decampment to the ACN quickly vanished as Mimiko sought to establish a separate political identity for himself.
