ABUJA—A German socio-political organisation, Konrad Adenauer Foundation, has expressed doubts over the readiness of the Federal Government to fight corruption.
The group, which spoke against recent trial of former Delta State governor, Chief James Ibori, in London, expressed astonishment over the release of governor and his escape from the country.
The Leader of the Foundation, Klaus Juergen Hedrich, who spoke during a visit to head office of Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, in Abuja, maintained that the Ibori scenario was difficult to understand.
He said: "I was a bit astonished; I wonder how it was possible to escape, but that was not my story anyway, I only can see at least corrupt people, including political class of a country, face problem and then they might face conviction if they commit crime, especially if it connects to corruption.
"It is proper to solve that problem, which cannot be solved from abroad; it has to be solved by Nigerians themselves."
Responding, Acting Chairman of ICPC, Mr. Ekpo Nta, requested the Foundation to assist in the training of young brilliant journalists in the area of investigative reporting since it was one of their intervention areas.
According to him, this crop of young Nigerians will be better equipped and fired with zeal and patriotism to carry out independent investigations for balanced reportage.
A sustainable tool for fighting corruption, he added, was the training of certified private investigators in the country.
