Johannesburg - There are South Africans stuck in Mali after the coup d'état in the West African nation, the department of international relations said on Saturday.
"Nobody can go into Mali, the airports are closed and logically it means that there are South African's stuck there, including our officials who are attached to the embassy," said spokesman Clayson Monyela.
Monyela said they did not have a count of how many South Africans could be stranded in the West African nation.
He said once communication channels into the country were opened, there would be more clarity on the number of stranded citizens.
Scores of Malian soldiers mutinied earlier this week and staged a coup d'état amid anger over what they say is lack of equipment to stamp out a Tuareg rebellion.
