LAGOS – Following students' unrest, which led to the destruction of property, including the burning of University of Lagos, UNILAG's Vice Chancellor's lounge, talks have resumed between the management of the school and National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, led by its National President, Mr Dauda Mohammed, on reinstating the Student Union.
It will be recalled that the Students Union government was banned in 2005 when the union was hijacked by suspected cultists, who wanted to control commercial life of the school. This led to protests by students which resulted in the destruction of school's property, though no life was lost.
UNILAG's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adetokunbo Sofoluwe, said there was the need for youths to take up leadership positions, so as to make them more responsive in the future.
He said: "There has to be a change from the students being confrontational to being responsible and we need assurances from NANS that it will educate the students on responsive student union that would not be hijacked by cult groups."
