Eligibility:
-A passion for the generation of scientific knowledge that advances pro-poor development
-PhD in veterinary epidemiology or a related field
-BVSc desirable, BSc in animal sciences possible
-Experience in research design and use of quantitative analytic methods (including epidemiological modeling) in assessing infectious disease prevalence Experience with field work in the developing world.
-Experience in clinical examination of pigs and obtaining biological samples
-Experience in sample barcoding systems and sample storage and tracking
-Development and maintenance of databases
-Knowledge of diagnostic laboratory assays – bacterial culture, faecal egg counts, ELISA, PCR
-Strong English language skills, both written and spoken (proficiency in a local language is an advantage); and
-Willingness to travel frequently, often to rural areas in developing countries

Scholarship Description: ILRI seeks to recruit a Post Doctoral Fellow to implement the animal health component of a project which aims to improve smallholder pig value chains in Uganda. The Post Doctoral Fellow will be part of a team designing and evaluating pilot interventions to improve livelihoods, incomes and assets of smallholder households by raising productivity of their pig enterprises based on a package of technical and organizational strategies. The Fellow will be part of the Animal Health Team and reports to the Project Coordinator. S/he will contribute to designing and working closely with national research and development partners to implement the research, with specific responsibility for characterizing the prevalence of pathogens affecting pigs in small holder farming system in multiple sites in Uganda. S/he will be expected to actively contribute to preparing strategic communication products including journal publications.
