Title: I’m still GBU champion –Joseph
Post by: Punch on Apr 06, 2012, 03:00 AM
Global Boxing Union female super bantamweight champion, Helen Joseph, has made it clear that she is still the champion of the division despite moving up to the featherweight division.

Joseph also corrected the erronous belief that she has lost the title during in a kickboxing bout with Ukraine's Valentyna Gupalo staged in Abuja last month.

"I didn't lose my title in the kickboxing match. The fight against Gupalo was for a vacant kickboxing title. I only lost the opportunity to win another title at a similar sport," Joseph, who was a kickboxer in 2007, said.

"I could have put up a better show than what I did against Gupalo but I had malaria before the fight, and I prepared poorly for it."

Joseph (11-1-1 6KO) recorded her first draw on March 24 in Johannesburg against South Africa's Unathi Myekeni, the only woman that has ever beaten her, but she still believes she can defeat in a rematch.

"When I lost to her the first time in 2009, I knew I could do better. But she won through a unanimous decision and there's nothing you can do about that," she said.

"I know I can beat her, I just have to put in extra efforts to do that."

Joseph is currently preparing to defend her title against an unnamed opponent in Lagos but the date has yet to be decided by the organisers.
