(http://www.thenationonlineng.net/2011/thumbnail.php?file=pat_729495661.jpg&size=article_medium) Prof. Utomi A former Presidential candidate, Prof. Pat Utomi, has stated that one of the biggest challenges facing Nigeria is that one cannot be sure of justice, describing the judicial system as very weak.
Utomi said foreign investment in Nigeria is low because investors would never be sure of getting justice, in case there would be need to resolve disputes over contracts and would rather prefer to invest in “more serious” countries.
The Director of the Lagos Business School urged journalists to always report the misbehaviour of judges.
He also declared that universities in Nigeria have become a joke, while “certificated illiterates” are being produced.
Utomi stated these on Wednesday at an International Conference and Book Presentation in honour of a foremost Professor of Mass Communication, Sylvanus Ajana Ekwelie, at the University of Port Harcourt.
The conference, with theme: “Advocacy Journalism and National Development,” was organised by UNIPORT’s Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies and chaired by a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Oleka Udeala.
The book, presented by Utomi, is titled: “Style in Media Production: Essays in honour of Prof. Ekwelie,” while he spoke on: “Critical Journalism and Development.”
He declared that the Nigerian Television Authority has contributed very little to Nigeria’s development, saying the station damaged news and media practice, by promoting “cheque-book journalism” and attaching commercial value to news.
