BENIN – Edo State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has denied the allegation by the state government that it was responsible for weekend's accident involving the governor's convoy in which three journalists lost their lives.
State Chairman of PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, who addressed newsmen in Benin, yesterday, described the accusation as a sign of "timidity," adding, "at a time like this when people should rally round the government, be prayerful and put politics aside, the state government had decided to politicise the incident."
Orbih and his party members observed a minute silence for the journalists who died in the accident. He recalled that the government in its first reaction had called for full police investigation into the accident and wondered why the same government would not wait for the outcome of the investigation before jumping into hasty conclusion.
Insisting that PDP had no hand in the accident, he called on the Police to investigate whether Governor Adams Oshiomhole drove himself with a serving member of the state House of Assembly sitting beside him after the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN rally at Afuze.
He also called on the Police to find out whether Oshiomhole had a valid driver's license and whether the governor was not under the influence of alcohol while he drove.
Edo PDP chairman also want the Police to investigate whether Oshiomhole was sleeping on steering and as a result, veered off the road leading to the accident.
He noted that his party, which was on a campaign rally at Ekiadolor, Ovia North-East Local Government Area, had to put off the rally when news got to them that the governor's convoy was involved in an accident with some journalists killed in the process.
