CALABAR – THE Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, Mr. Osita Ezechukwu, has promised to clamp down on pipeline and cable vandals, night marauders and cultists in the state, saying there would be no longer hiding place for criminals.
Mr. Ezechukwu, who was reacting to media reports on the alleged increase in criminal activities, said Cross River State was one of the states with the lowest crime rates in the country.
He said the Police had strategised to contain gangsters, vandals and cultists that operate in some back streets. He refuted reports in a section of the press that security situation in the state was alarming.
He said: "Even though the state is very safe and peaceful and the crime rate is about the lowest, the police cannot fold its arms and become complacent. That report was not true. Cross River State ranks among the states with the lowest crime rate in Nigeria and we have explored proactive measures to maintain that."
The Commissioner of Police said upon resumption of office about two months ago he rounded up more than 30 cult boys that unleashed attacks on residents of parts of Calabar South Local Government Council.
He said: "These cult boys are still in detention pending when we complete our findings", adding, that even policemen found to have collaborated with criminals have been arrested.
He also said that as part of the new strategy his regime has put up in place to consolidate on the low level of crime and peace throughout the state, many of his men had been deployed into most back streets and dark spots.
