UMUAHIA—Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, has called on traditional rulers in Abia State not to harbour criminals in their communities, charging them to fight crime by providing useful information to the police.
Abubakar, who had an interactive session with traditional rulers in the state at Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, explained that the police were not spirit to know criminals among the residents of the community.
According to the IGP, traditional rulers live and know their subjects and would be in a better position to give information on the activities of their subjects.
Meanwhile, Governor Theodore Orji has called on the Federal Government to invest more money on security to enable the police and other security agencies effectively tackle security challenges facing the country.
Orji, who spoke when Acting Inspector General of Police visited him at Government House, Umuahia, noted that security was capital intensive.
According to him, security is paramount for any government, pointing out that without adequate funds to the police much would not be achieved.
Orji said any leader who ignored security was toying with the lives of the people.
He said his government had donated the highest number of vehicles to the police to do their job while more will come soon.
The governor commended the Inspector General of Police for the innovations he had so far brought to the police and expressed the hope that it would improve the battered image of the police.
He also commended the police for the effort they put in to combat kidnapping in the state and urged the Acting Inspector General of police not to be deterred by the present security challenges in the country.
Earlier, Abubakar had told the governor that he was on a familiarization tour of the command in the state, pointing out that his visit was to re-evaluate the security situation, preparedness of his men in the state, as well as the challenges, problems and how to tackle them.
