In the aftermath of the sack of 778 doctors by the Lagos state government today, the state has announced the immediate recruitment of 373 new doctors.
A statement signed by the head of service of Lagos state, Adesegun Ogunlewe said the new doctors are to be deployed with immediate effect to public hospitals while recruitment continues to fill newly vacant positions statewide.
Of the sacked doctors, 316 doctors were working with the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital while the remaining 472 were from other hospitals in the State.
In the statement, Ogunlewe said the 778 doctors were relieved of their duties by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital Board and the State's Health Service Commission (HSC), "because of the refusal of the striking doctors to answer to queries issued to them to explain why they were absent from work without leave and without the due observance of the rules and regulations guiding strikes and industrial actions in the State's Public Service."
