New York - The United Nations Security Council is urging the West African regional group Ecowas to implement its "zero-tolerance" policy against coups and pursue measures to restore the legitimate government in Guinea-Bissau, which was ousted by the military last month.
It called on Secretary General Ban Ki-moon "to engage actively" with Ecowas and other international organisations, including the African Union and the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, to "enable the restoration of the constitutional order".
A press statement issued on Tuesday by the council also called on the regional and international players to ensure that their long-term strategy to stabilise the West African nation addresses critical issues including reforming the country's security sector and combating drug trafficking.
But Ecowas Commissioner Salamatu Hussaini-Suleiman said on Monday that immediately restoring the constitutional order that existed before the coup could lead to civil war. - Sapa-AP
