The forum, which consists of the 36 elected governors, made the plea at its meeting which ended in the early hours of Thursday in Abuja.
The plea was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and read by the Chairman Governor Chibuike Amechi of Rivers.
He said the forum would hold a brainstorming session in June with a view to addressing the country`s security challenges, which according to him, `` had become a national embarrassment’’.
The communiqué stated that the governors had meanwhile; `` resolved to channel more resources towards the empowerment of youths, women and the vulnerable in the country’’.
It added that the governors had also resolved to create enabling environment for economic development as part of efforts to mitigate the lingering security challenges in the country.
The forum expressed concern at the low level of commitment in polio eradication and promised to hold council chairmen and relevant stakeholders accountable.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the forum at its April 23 meeting renewed its commitment to eradicating Wild Polio Virus in parts of the country.
It also reiterated the earlier decision that deputy governors should take charge of the state task force on polio eradication while state governors` wives should assist in the day-to-day interventions in the fight against the disease where necessary.
