Residents of Ikorodu, a surbub of Lagos, on Sunday appealed to the Federal and Lagos State Governments to rescue them from the traffic gridlock in the area.
They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that their appeal had became imperative because of the man hours lost on the only access road to the area.
According to them, the traffic gridlock has also made people residing in the area vulnerable to the current security challenges in the country.
The road users claimed that they spent about three hours daily to commute from Ikorodu to Ketu and vice versa, a journey that ordinarily takes about 30minutes.
They said that their worries had been compounded by high rate of commercial activities on the road, as traders annexed the entire road by displaying all manners of goods.
Mr Oyinade Omogbhade, a banker who resides in the area, described his experience on the road as hell on earth.
"I will leave my house before 6:00 a m, yet I get to my place of work very late. It is saddening that the problem is unidentified.''
Mr Uche Onabhilim, a business man, also said that the indiscipline of the commercial bus and other Nigerians were the major causes of the endless traffic on road.
Mrs Bunmi Martins, a business woman, observed that the traffic gridlock also occurred even at weekends and public holidays.
"Each day, we face traffic on this road, it happens every day even on Saturday and Sundays, we spend most of our productive time in the traffic, it's even worse when we are returning,'' she said.
Mr Wasiu Ewele , a transporter, said that the traffic had compelled most of them to incur deficits in their vehicles fuelling budgeting.
"We normally used double of the fuel we budgeted for and that is why we increase the transport fare from N100 to N200, he said."
Miss Yetunde Enifeni, a youth corps member residing in Ikorodu, said that the daily traffic has made it impossible to save from her earnings.
"This traffic has almost made me to use all my allowances to patronise motorcyclists popularly known as `Okada' to get to my place of primary assignment on time. But by the end. of the month I am left with nothing,'' She said. NAN
