BENIN CITY – Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), arrived Benin City, Edo State, yesterday, for the commissioning of multi billion naira projects executed by the Governor Adams Oshiomhole administration.
Gowon who spoke to newsmen at the Benin Airport, on arrival, disagreed with the Federal Government over the naming of the University of Lagos after the acclaimed winner of the 1993 Presidential election, late Chief Moshood Abiola, pointing out that Nigerians would have been consulted before the decision was taken.
Gowon who commended Governor Oshiomhole for what he described as the magic he had impacted in the state in the area of infrastructure, said: "Oshiomhole is like Gen. Samuel Ogbemudia, who was there as the governor of the old Midwest. He did a lot for the people of the region and we are proud of him."
He was received at the airport by the Chief of Staff to the state government, Osaradion Ogie, who stood in for Oshiomhole, who was on campaign at Orhiomwon Local Government Area of the state.
