LAGOS—Former Director of Military Intelligence, Brig-General Ibrahim Sabo(rtd), yesterday, said for the government to rid the country of insecurity, it must enlist the support of ethnic nationalities in the country.
Sabo, who joined other prominent Nigerians to proffer solutions to the pervading national insecurity in the country, said all forms of insurgency and insecurity were as a result of years of neglect of the legitimate yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians to have a better society.
He spoke at a summit organised in Lagos by Coalition of Ethnic Nationalities of Nigeria, CENN, comprising 29 ethnic nationality groups.
He said: "Insurgency, militancy and other forms of uprisings or group protests against constituted authorities occur most of the time because peaceful and genuine aspirations of groups of people are disregarded over long periods.
Others at the programme hosted by Dr. Fredrick Fasehun, leader of Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, included Director-General of Nigeria Institute of International Affairs, Prof. Sola Akinterinwa, who spoke on 'Ethnicity, Religion and Democratic Nationalism in Nigeria'.
